The Office (AmazonPrimeVideo) Review :-

The challenge of adapting one of the most influential sitcoms of modern times is that it will inevitably be compared to its predecessor, and this holds true even before its release. Prime Video’s gender-swapped The Office strives to feel both familiar and fresh, yet it’s hard not to view it through a well-worn lens. The American version has become a comfort watch for me, so my perspective on the Australian The Office can be a bit biased.

However, the issue lies not with the viewers. The parallels are hard to ignore; despite the Australian version’s attempts to address contemporary topics, like remote work, it closely mirrors the American show episode after episode. This leads you to instinctively wonder how characters like Dwight would react to situations Lizzie finds herself in. That said, the show is still humorous, and hats off to Felicity Ward for doing a phenomenal job of stepping into Steve Carell’s sizable shoes—something I didn’t think was possible.

Even so, there’s a noticeable absence—unlike the first season of the American version, the 2024 series doesn’t evoke the same level of discomfort and settles into an odd middle ground that feels neither truly uncomfortable nor genuinely funny. The occasional bursts of humor only highlight this, as it becomes clear that the show is playing it safe, which can be frustrating. Given the contributions of The Office and Parks and Recreation to the workplace comedy genre, the Australian version falls significantly short, despite its best efforts.

I also find it unamusing how closely the creators have mirrored the American characters. Aside from swapping genders, the essence of these characters remains largely unchanged, particularly with Dwight and Lizzie. Edith Poor’s Lizzie Moyle is designed to embody Dwight in every conceivable way, resulting in a character who lacks individuality and depth, effectively replicating Rainn Wilson’s iconic portrayal without adding anything new. While some of the other characters attempt to carve out their own identities, they ultimately fall back into familiar patterns.

The Office (AmazonPrimeVideo) Trailor :-

The first episode is genuinely surprising, as the topic of remote work feels fresh and offers a new twist on an old theme. However, as the series progresses, it begins to feel sluggish and dull. I believe the show would have been better off sticking to topical themes rather than attempting to adapt familiar concepts for this new cast of characters.

Final Thought

The Office Australia features some entertaining funny moments, but overall, it feels similar to the American version in several respects. While it gender-swaps some characters and incorporates relatable, real-world topics, each episode tends to mirror the original without offering anything particularly unique or distinctive. It’s not the worst show out there, but if you’re a fan of the original, a rewatch might be the better option.
