The Mehta Boys (AmazonPrimeVideo) Review :-

There are few things as relatable as witnessing strained relationships within Indian households and the dysfunction that exists across different families. For Indian kids, it’s so commonplace and familiar that it often doesn’t seem striking or even surprising — we’re all just imperfect people trying to coexist with the older generation, hoping we don’t lose our sanity in the process.

The Mehta Boys on Prime Video offers a humorous and heartfelt experience, with a charm in its dysfunction that sneaks up on you in the sweetest way. The series captures the complexities and struggles many of us face with our parents, presenting them in a relatable and compassionate manner. There’s no blame placed on anyone; instead, it highlights how the generational gap and the baggage from our childhoods often make it difficult for us to truly understand each other’s viewpoints and bridge the divide.

In a way, the drama film nails this dynamic — while Amay and his father have plenty of differing opinions, their interactions are portrayed in a humorous light. It’s a bit awkward at times, but their perspectives are easy to understand, and you quickly find yourself relating to them. The film doesn’t present things as black and white, which makes it effortless to connect with every character. What truly sets this film apart from others on a similar theme is how kind and likable the characters are, despite their flaws.

There’s also a sweet romantic subplot that tugs at the heartstrings. Boman Irani delivers a brilliant performance — his subtle shifts in mood and the emotions that come through, especially when he talks about his wife, are so poignant that it’s hard not to get drawn in. Avinash Tiwary, as always, shines, bringing depth to his portrayal of the insecure son who still has some growing to do. The chemistry between the two actors is excellent, and their back-and-forth keeps you hooked. It’s frustrating at times, but in a strangely comforting way.

That said, I have to admit that I’m not fully satisfied with the explanation provided in the film for why Amay has such a strained relationship with his father. It feels unconvincing, and frankly, a bit of a letdown because it comes across as a bit of a cop-out. Many young people move away from their hometowns in search of better opportunities, so it feels shallow to not explore why this particular issue was such a big deal in Amay’s family, especially when his sister also lives away (in America, no less!). This lack of depth causes the film to lose some of its impact, as the central conflict we follow for so long starts to feel like a forced drama with no real substance behind it.

Final Thought

The Mehta Boys is an emotional journey that doesn’t fully explain the reasons behind it all. We argue, face challenges, have emotional outbursts, and eventually reconcile. While there are moments that feel utterly unbelievable, there are also scenes that will tug at your heartstrings in unexpected ways. With exceptional and heartfelt performances, the Prime Video film offers solid entertainment, though it falls just short of being truly great.
