The impossible will take a little longer,” declares IGP D R Karthikeyan (Amit Sial), capturing the spirit of the series as he undertakes a tense 90-day mission to solve the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Adapted from investigative journalist Anirudhya Mitra’s book Ninety Days, this thriller provides a detailed, step-by-step account of the CBI’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) as they unravel the conspiracy, apprehend the culprits, and track down the mastermind, Sivarasan (Shafeeq Mustafa), to his final refuge.
Co-written by director Nagesh Kukunoor alongside Rohit Banawalikar and Sriram Rajan, the series is a tightly woven, compelling thriller that chronicles the assassination that shook India and the relentless manhunt that followed. The CBI team is composed of some of its sharpest minds: DIG Amod Kant (Danish Iqbal), known for solving Indira Gandhi’s assassination; DIG Raju (Girish Sharma), an expert in counterinsurgency in Jammu & Kashmir; DSP Raghothaman (Bagavathi Perumal), the agency’s top interrogator; and SPI Amit Verma (Sahil Vaid), who tracked down General Arun Vaidya’s assassin and Khalistani terrorist Jinda.
The story excels in showing how this elite team pieces together the puzzle and utilizes its extensive network to hunt LTTE operatives—feared for their cunning tactics—despite the group’s significant public support. The clash between these two formidable forces unfolds in a gripping, edge-of-your-seat manner that keeps viewers thoroughly engaged.
Kukunoor skillfully balances intense drama with everyday moments that bring the characters to life. The feared militant Sivarasan and his aide Subha (Gouri Padmakumar) watch a Rajinikanth film together; Subha calmly paints her nails while guarding their hideout with a rifle. Meanwhile, Amit and Raghothaman share a meal at a roadside dhaba, debating North Indian versus South Indian cuisine just before meeting an informant. The sharp yet grounded Amod Kant reflects on the role of luck in investigations, while viewers learn that the dilapidated building assigned to the SIT was considered cursed—no occupant had ever succeeded there. These scenes blend effortlessly into the narrative, adding depth and realism.
Though set against a backdrop of complex cross-border politics and socio-political tensions, the series keeps its focus firmly on the investigation itself. However, the lack of background on the IPKF (Indian Peace Keeping Force) and Rajiv Gandhi’s role might leave viewers unfamiliar with the context wanting more. Still, the show powerfully captures the psychological warfare and strategic maneuvering that enable the team to outsmart even the most ruthless LTTE operatives.

However, in the final 36 hours, the mounting tension and bureaucratic hurdles reach a boiling point, driving the suspense to a gripping climax.
Final Thought
Cinematographer Sangram Giri vividly brings 1990s Tamil Nadu to life, while Tapas Relia’s score perfectly sets the tone. The casting is spot-on—Amit Sial, Bagavathi Perumal, Sahil Vaid, and Danish Iqbal embody their CBI roles with authenticity, alongside Vidyuth Gargi’s compelling portrayal of the commando. Shafeeq Mustafa stands out as the cold, arrogant Sivarasan, and Gouri Padmakumar impresses as the fierce yet reserved Subha.
The series proves that you don’t need nonstop action to create edge-of-your-seat suspense. It’s a taut, binge-worthy thriller that keeps viewers hooked from start to finish.
