The Greatest of All Time Review :-
In the 2007 film Azhagiya Tamil Magan, a young Vijay faced off against his look-alike. Now, seventeen years later, GOAT revisits this concept, showcasing a fresh dynamic with Thalapathy Vijay facing off against Ilaya Thalapathy. GOAT introduces a new side of Vijay for fans to enjoy, as he plays both the hero and the villain, under the direction of Venkat Prabhu.
The film follows MS Gandhi (Vijay), a highly-skilled agent in the Special Anti-Terrorist Squad (SATS), who leads a double life as a ‘Family Man,’ concealing his dangerous job from his wife, Sneha. Balancing family life with his covert operations, Gandhi, who is expecting his second child with Sneha, lives a seemingly normal life with their son, Jeevan. His SATS team includes Sunil Thiagarajan (Prashanth), Kalyan Sundaram (Prabhudeva), Ajay (Ajmal Ameer), and their boss Nazeer (Jayaram).
During a work-cation in Thailand, an unexpected incident forces Gandhi to rethink his approach to his job. Fast forward 17 years, Gandhi is now an immigration officer, leading a mundane life and separated from his wife, who is raising their daughter. On a work trip to Russia, he encounters Jeevan, now a young Vijay, and a thrilling game of cat and mouse ensues.
The first half of the film combines action and emotional moments to set up an intriguing interval block that, while impactful, ultimately falls into predictable patterns. The second half offers numerous twists, but the climax, featuring a fan-favorite scene during a CSK live match, feels somewhat prolonged. The storyline follows a familiar template, making the narrative easy to anticipate. The film’s length also poses a concern, and the action sequences are fairly average. However, the face-off scenes between the young and older Vijay are engaging.
Director Venkat Prabhu capitalizes on Vijay’s trademark charm, leveraging de-aging technology to showcase him in both his younger and older roles with remarkable ease. Vijay’s dual performance is a major highlight, and he excels in both his youthful portrayal and his compelling villainous role.
Vijay remains the film’s greatest asset, and his portrayal is enhanced by a subtle political message. Kokila Mohan, as Rajiv Menon, a rogue former SATS officer, delivers a solid performance as the antagonist, although his role somewhat pales in comparison to the two Vijays. Supporting actors Prashanth, Prabhudeva, Sneha, Jayaram, and Meenakshi Chowdary contribute to the film’s appeal, while Yogi Babu and Premji provide comic relief, with Yogi Babu standing out in the Gandhi-Nehru segment. The de-aging technology, contrary to earlier critiques after the trailer release, is impressively executed.

The film seamlessly incorporates nods to Vijay and Venkat Prabhu’s previous works, including memorable moments from Mankatha, without being excessive. From references to Ghilli‘s Marudhamalai to Beast‘s Habibi, Venkat Prabhu pays tribute to fans with a variety of homages. Trisha’s special cameo, where she and Vijay perform the iconic ‘Appadi Podu’ dance, elicits enthusiastic reactions. The film also features nostalgic elements like the CSK magic, Ranjithame-style kiss, Guna’s Kanmani Anbodu, Padayappa’s signature music, and a playful Thala-Thalapathy debate, keeping viewers engaged despite the predictable storyline.
GOAT would have benefited from stronger music. While Yuvan Shankar Raja excels in the action and elevation tracks, the songs, including the special number with Trisha, fall short. The cinematography is generally average, with VFX dominating many of the outdoor scenes.
Filled with countless fan-pleasing moments and high on mass appeal, GOAT is an average experience for general audiences but a thrilling watch for dedicated fans. While it showcases Vijay’s charisma, after 32 years and 68 films, GOAT is entertaining but doesn’t quite live up to the title of Greatest Of All Times.
