If you remember the unsettling experience of watching The Mist, The Eternaut will feel somewhat familiar. With ash falling from the sky, people dying, and something in the air slowly killing them, it shares a similar atmosphere. However, in this Argentine series, the alien invasion comes later, and the toxic ash is only the beginning of a much larger destructive plot. So, while the stakes are high, I’d say it’s less traumatizing than witnessing a man kill everyone in his car before stepping outside to end his life—only for help to arrive moments too late.
Putting the trauma aside, Netflix’s The Eternaut is a visually stunning series full of suspense and anticipation. It’s a slow-burn story that centers more on the human spirit and society’s collapse in the face of an impending threat. Sci-fi fans craving more action may find themselves frustrated at times, as it’s mostly character-driven. The focus is on a group of people coming together to survive against an unknown, unseen danger.
The series gains momentum a few episodes in, as we’re introduced to more than just the toxic ash. It builds tension effectively, though at a slow pace, leaving viewers eager for more. The characters draw us into the story, making us invested in their fates and whether they’ll make it out alive. While their motivations differ, it quickly becomes clear that survival will require them to come together. Watching their relationships evolve adds an interesting dynamic, almost like being a fly on the wall, witnessing the unfolding drama with all its complications.
That said, the series takes its time to introduce any real twists, which might frustrate some viewers. The show’s ability to ground the fiction in a realistic depiction of the characters’ terrifying circumstances makes the world feel authentic, and the suspense all the more gripping.
The performances in The Eternaut are essential to its success. Given how closely we follow the characters in their every move, the cast delivers deeply compelling, believable performances. Ricardo Darín, Carla Peterson, César Troncoso, and Andrea Pietra shine in their roles, leaving a lasting impact in every scene. The highlight, for me, is undoubtedly the church scene — a moment that justifies the slow build-up of the first few episodes. However, it’s worth noting that the show somewhat resets after that moment, which might frustrate some viewers looking for consistent progression.
