The Deliverance (Netflix) Review :-
Seeking a fresh start, struggling single mother Ebony Jackson (Andra Day) relocates her three children to a new home in Pittsburgh, setting the stage for The Deliverance, the latest film from director Lee Daniels. Initially, the movie unfolds as a heartfelt drama about a dysfunctional family but soon shifts into a supernatural horror that challenges its own credibility.
Based on the real-life case of LaToya Ammons, an Indiana woman who alleged her home was haunted by demonic forces that ultimately possessed her children, the film gradually introduces its supernatural elements. While the latter part of the movie delves into these eerie phenomena, the first act primarily explores the family’s domestic struggles and social hurdles. This initial focus is where The Deliverance shines the most.
The film gains considerable credibility from its solid cast. Andra Day takes on the role of Ebony, a well-intentioned but deeply troubled single mother whose tumultuous past influences her present struggles. After relocating to a Pittsburgh house with her three children—Nate (Caleb McLaughlin), Shante (Demi Singleton), and Andre (Anthony B. Jenkins)—Ebony’s issues with her past resurface, leading to her own abusive behavior and worsening alcoholism.
Adding to the complexity, Ebony’s demanding mother, Alberta (Glenn Close), moves in to help with the children. The family’s every move is scrutinized by a persistent social worker named Cynthia (Mo’Nique). Nate endures harassment from a local bully, Shante grieves for her absent father, and Andre finds solace in an imaginary friend named Trey. Despite the intense drama, director Lee Daniels, along with co-writers David Coggeshall and Elijah Bynum, craft a compelling and realistic portrait of a family grappling with crisis.

However, the film’s horror elements unfortunately fall into familiar territory. It begins with unsettling phenomena such as strange odors emanating from the basement, persistent buzzing flies, and the typical loud bangs and mysteriously opening doors. Andre’s odd behavior, including disturbing conversations with his imaginary friend Trey, adds to the eerie atmosphere, along with the mysterious appearances of a strange woman (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) outside their home.
The climax devolves into a trope-heavy finale that veers into Exorcist-like territory. Ebony confronts demonic voices, unsettling body contortions, levitations, and even stigmata as she fights to protect her children. Despite some potentially intriguing allegorical themes, the movie morphs into a generic possession film. The last 30 minutes clash with the grounded drama that preceded them, ultimately diminishing the impact of Andra Day’s powerful performance.
