The film attempts to explore the moral complexities faced by veterans like James who are abandoned by the system they once served. It delves into the struggles of reintegrating into civilian life and the lengths individuals may go to in order to support their loved ones. Chris Pine’s portrayal of James Harper adds depth to the character, portraying him as a man torn between his duty to his family and his sense of honor as a soldier.
One of the strengths of “The Contractor” lies in the chemistry between Chris Pine and Ben Foster. Despite their limited screen time together, their interactions feel genuine, providing some of the film’s most compelling moments. However, the plot is not without its flaws. A predictable twist in the narrative undermines the coherence of the story, leaving some loose ends unresolved.
The supporting cast, including Eddie Marsan as Virgil and Kiefer Sutherland as Rusty, offer solid performances, adding layers to the film’s ensemble. Unfortunately, Gillian Jacobs’ portrayal of James’ wife, Brianne, feels underdeveloped and stereotypical. Her character serves as little more than a plot device to illustrate James’ domestic struggles, lacking agency and depth.
Director Tarik Saleh’s direction fails to elevate the film beyond its derivative script, ultimately doing a disservice to both the cast and the audience. While “The Contractor” has its moments, particularly in the performances of Chris Pine and Ben Foster, it ultimately falls short of delivering a truly satisfying cinematic experience.
