The Buckingham Murders Review :-
When a young Sikh boy disappears in a British town, a Muslim teenager is quickly targeted as the prime suspect. Amid the backdrop of regional religious tensions, the investigation encounters numerous obstacles. Jas (played by Kareena Kapoor Khan), a stoic detective in her forties haunted by the loss of her own child, is assigned the case. To cope with her grief, she immerses herself in the investigation, which not only reopens her personal wounds but also threatens to ignite communal discord among the immigrant community.
British police procedurals such as Happy Valley, Broadchurch, and Blue Lights have set a high standard. Kate Winslet’s Mare of Easttown continued this tradition, delivering an exceptional masterclass in female-led detective dramas that delve into personal trauma and professional challenges. These shows transcend the typical crime thriller genre, offering insightful examinations of human behavior, relationships, and the complexities of daily life.
The Buckingham Murders clearly draws inspiration from its acclaimed predecessors, capturing a sense of eerie silence and darkness that permeates Hansal Mehta’s police procedural-crime drama. The atmosphere remains consistently heavy, with no effort to lighten the mood or reduce the paranoia. While the slow-burn crime drama maintains its grit and unpredictability, it lacks the urgent energy and tension typically associated with the genre. The show’s focus on broader themes—whether political, religious, social, or related to sexuality and gender—often overshadows the central murder case, resulting in a sense of stagnation and bleakness during the interrogations.
Although sleepy English towns are a classic setting for murder mysteries, the characters in The Buckingham Murders do not convincingly inhabit their surroundings, a similar issue seen in Sonam Kapoor’s Blind.
The Buckingham Murders Trailor :-
Despite a somewhat uneven narrative, the film emerges as a compelling character study of unresolved grief and repressed anger. Jas’ reluctance to face her psychological issues and move forward in life is effectively portrayed, with a particularly memorable scene between Jas and her father leaving a lasting impression. Her tragic backstory adds depth to the story, enriching the plot with suspects and twists. The strong performances and a bold climax further enhance the film’s impact.
Kareena Kapoor Khan, often celebrated for her commercial success, shows a subtler, more nuanced side here, reminiscent of her work in Udta Punjab, Jaane Jaan, and Talaash. In this role, the de-glamorous Bebo uses her silence as a powerful tool amid the chaos, seeking closure through the investigation. This role marks a refreshing departure for her. Chef Ranveer Brar and Ash Tandon also deliver convincing performances in their significant roles.
While this film might not deliver the pulse-pounding intensity of a typical hard-hitting crime thriller, its exploration and portrayal of grief, isolation, and repressed anger are commendable. The identity of the killer remains unpredictable until the very end, which is a significant achievement for the film. If you’re seeking a mystery with a surprising resolution, it succeeds on that front. However, the buildup could have been more chilling and engaging.
