What defines quality journalism today? Is it prevalent in our media landscape? Are journalists brave enough to challenge authority and committed enough to uphold truth without compromise? Or have media outlets become puppets serving the interests of powerful corporations? These are the compelling questions that drive the narrative of the gripping and binge-worthy eight episodes of the new Zee5 series.
Continuing in the footsteps of its predecessor, Season 2 of “The Broken News” seamlessly blends real-life references, including characters, headlines, and governmental policies in India, with fictional elements. While the season begins as a captivating newsroom drama, it evolves into a suspenseful thriller as it progresses.
The central conflict revolves around two rival media houses, Awaz Bharati and Josh 24/7. While one, led by editor Dipankar Sanyal, prioritizes sensationalism and ratings, the other, helmed by editor Amina Qureshi, upholds the values of ethical journalism. Directed by Vinay Waikul and penned by Sambit Mishra, the second season delves deeper into this ideological battle.
Radha Bhargav’s return to the newsroom after a stint in jail marks a significant shift in her character. The once gritty journalist becomes consumed by a desire for revenge, straying from the principles of ethical reporting. This creates tension with Amina, her friend and mentor, who champions integrity in journalism. Similarly, Shriya Pilgaonkar shines in her portrayal of Radha Bhargav, depicting her character’s increased vulnerability with finesse. However, it is Sonali Bendre who steals the show with her portrayal of Amina.
