The Breakthrough (Netflix) Review :-

What could be worse than the murder of an innocent, unlikely victim? A murder with no motive or reason. Netflix’s The Breakthrough takes viewers on a gut-wrenching journey through a thrilling and devastating case that will pull you in and leave you shaken. In just four short episodes, the series delivers a powerful punch from the very beginning, setting the scene and building intrigue right away. Tense and unrelenting, it does an excellent job of creating a gripping atmosphere and maintaining it throughout. The devastating impact of such a senseless crime on both the family and the community is felt deeply in every moment.

While the series focuses heavily on the emotional weight of the situation, it can be overwhelming for viewers. With only four episodes, it starts off feeling thrilling, but the pace soon lags. After the first episode, a sense of boredom begins to creep in, as the story struggles to maintain momentum. For a crime drama to truly work, it needs to keep us on the edge by actively solving the case. Unfortunately, The Breakthrough feels rather laid-back, with John’s ego taking center stage until the plot finally picks up in the final episode.

Given that the true story spans over a decade, the series wisely skips through the more stagnant periods, but even then, it still feels oddly sluggish. It never quite seems to gain momentum, and you may find yourself wondering if John ever did anything beyond making bold claims!

The characters in the series could have been more compelling. While it’s based on a true story, John could have been portrayed with a bit more humility and less unfounded overconfidence. Although it’s interesting to watch his desperate race against time, I found myself increasingly frustrated with his character, a feeling that lingers throughout. His dedication is admirable, but it’s also what seems to trap him, and that’s tough to accept when a young child’s pursuit of justice is at stake.

The dynamic between John and Per is underexplored, even though it’s fascinating to watch unfold. As the episodes progress, we see John, the lone wolf, face resistance for the first time from Per, who is strong-willed and dedicated to his work. I found Per to be a compelling character, but once again, there’s not enough time devoted to fully exploring this relationship. Peter Eggers and Mattias Nordkvist deliver strong performances as John and Per, and while their characters can be quite downbeat, both actors bring depth to their roles, which fits the tone of the series well.

The issue with The Breakthrough is that it loses its momentum after the first episode and fails to sustain the mystery and emotional weight that the characters should be grappling with. There are numerous moments and opportunities that could have made this series truly stand out, but unfortunately, the show doesn’t capitalize on them, leaving it as just another forgettable crime drama without much to offer.

Final Thought

The Breakthrough is a peculiar series. While its subject matter is genuinely intriguing, its flawed execution drags down the runtime by failing to make meaningful progress. Despite this, it still manages to keep you hooked, compelling you to watch until the end just to find out if John ever catches the killer. It’s a truly curious situation to watch unfold.
