The Åre Murders (Netflix) Review :-

Netflix’s The Åre Murders is a gripping and dark journey through the small town of Åre, where hidden secrets and shocking truths lurk around every corner. Based on two separate books, the series unfolds over five short episodes, following Hanna, who, after a series of misfortunes in Stockholm, is drawn into solving the murder of a young girl in this mysterious town.

Although the series is brief for a murder mystery based on two books, I found the fast-paced, compact format to be incredibly engaging. It doesn’t allow for any pauses—one event leads seamlessly to the next, and the mystery intensifies right until the very end. Along the way, we encounter multiple criminals, adding layers to the twists and turns of the investigation. The show does an excellent job of immersing viewers in Åre’s dark, haunting world, and the snowy Christmas backdrop only amplifies the eerie atmosphere.

Setting the series during Christmas was a brilliant choice. The contrast between the festive, joyful season and the uncovering of tragic secrets adds a layer of discomfort that really resonates with viewers. The Åre Murders uses this backdrop effectively to set the tone for a compelling experience. While it touches on significant issues like human trafficking and grooming, it doesn’t dive too deeply into them, which slightly diminishes their impact. Still, these elements enhance the emotional depth of the series, creating a strong sense of empathy for the victims involved.

Unfortunately, the series doesn’t delve deeply into the characters, which feels like a missed opportunity. It could have benefitted from spending more time exploring the individuals involved rather than focusing solely on the case details. While this fast-paced format has its merits, a deeper look into the characters would have made the story even more engaging. That said, the performances are outstanding. Carla Sehn is excellent as Hanna, a woman grappling with both personal and professional struggles while trying to do what’s right. It’s a bit frustrating that we don’t get more insight into Åre itself, but it’s a minor setback in an otherwise solid series.

The Åre Murders is divided into two parts, each focusing on a different story. I’m not entirely sure why the series was structured this way, as it might have worked better if released as two separate seasons. This approach could have allowed for more in-depth exploration of the characters and their respective storylines. As it stands, though, it forces us to rush through both stories. Whether this is a positive or negative aspect really comes down to personal preference. For some, it might add to the intrigue, while others may feel it detracts from the experience.

Final Thought

The Åre Murders is a brief but gripping watch that successfully sets a dark, eerie tone against the backdrop of snowy mountains. While it’s entertaining, it doesn’t quite stand out as something extraordinary, so it’s best to manage expectations. Additionally, the two parts feel somewhat disjointed and abrupt — splitting them into separate seasons might have provided a more cohesive experience.
