When Ali Abbasi chose to depict one of the most controversial figures of our time, Donald Trump, it became clear he intended to delve into the darker aspects of a man who elicits both admiration and disdain. The Apprentice doesn’t shy away from presenting Trump in a negative light; rather, it portrays him with a sense of disgust, which feels entirely fitting given his questionable actions throughout his life. This focus is where the film, led by Sebastian Stan, truly succeeds. The Apprentice focuses on a man who has openly insulted disabled individuals and shown disrespect to many, even labeling the filmmaker behind this project as “human scum.” There’s no subtlety in how Trump’s life is portrayed on screen. A polarizing figure, the film doesn’t shy away from highlighting that his life has largely been driven by self-serving decisions. The writing refrains from trying to reshape Trump into something he isn’t; viewers familiar with his real-life persona already recognize the darker facets of his character, while those unwilling to confront it are unlikely to be part of the audience.

The film emphasizes how Trump’s humanity eroded with each choice he made, suggesting he may never have been truly humane at his core.
