The Abandons Season 1 Review :-
Western shows usually end up being either very exciting or very boring — and sadly, this Netflix series falls into the boring side. Set in 1854, the story focuses on Constance Van Ness and her wealthy family, who run the local silver mine and hold economic, political, and social power over Angel’s Ridge. Their control is challenged by Fiona Nolan, a woman who cannot have children but has adopted several orphans. She is determined to protect her land and her values, no matter what it takes.
Creator Kurt Sutter includes many side plots and characters, but the main focus is the tense rivalry between Constance and Fiona. The show leans more on familiar character types than on an exciting plot.
The series is set in the 1850s Washington Territory, with dusty streets, saloons, and mines capturing the classic frontier feel. The story takes place in Angel’s Ridge, where Fiona and her adopted family, the Abandons, live on a ranch outside town. Their struggle with the Van Ness family turns the town into a fight over land, power, and survival.
Across its seven episodes, the series relies on familiar elements: young romance, brief sexual tension, and icy stares between rivals on horseback. The dusty streets and frontier-town visuals are striking, but without a strong story, they start to feel overwhelming.
It’s nice to see strong women at the center in the male-dominated 1800s setting, but the show moves slowly due to long explanations and dialogue. While it shows some promise, it only gives small hints of its potential.
The Abandons Season 1 Trailor :-
The performances are a strong point. Lena Headey plays Fiona with strength, warmth, and determination, while Gillian Anderson portrays Constance with a mix of icy ambition and hidden vulnerability. Themes of motherhood and power give the characters depth. In the supporting cast, Michiel Huisman shines as Roache, hired by the Van Ness family to find their missing heir, Willem Van Ness (Toby Hemingway). His energy and presence help lift the show’s slow pace.
Final Thought
The show succeeds in creating the right mood with excellent cinematography by Aske Foss, Boris Mojsovski, and Jarrett Craig, and a well-suited musical score. However, it feels slow due to long-winded writing and prolonged conflicts. With more talking than action, the series doesn’t quite reach the full impact of the powerful period drama it tries to be.
