David Letterman is undeniably a hilarious individual, unafraid to poke fun at himself or the platform that’s hosting his show. However, “That’s My Time With David Letterman” is not his Netflix special, as one might hope. This show was recorded as part of the streaming giant’s Netflix Is A Joke festival, featuring up-and-coming comedians, some of whom are popular on social media, have done a special or two, or are even working on “Saturday Night Live.”
Each episode runs for just under 20 minutes, with Letterman delivering an entertaining monologue at the outset. Whether he’s joking about his age, reminiscing about the 80s, or sharing anecdotes about Hollywood, his witty remarks are sure to elicit laughter. However, the brevity of his monologue may leave viewers craving more. Following the monologue, Letterman introduces a comedian, who performs a set before joining him for a conversation about their material and personal experiences, sprinkled with additional jokes.
The featured comics deliver enjoyable performances, landing many of their jokes successfully. For instance, Sam Morril humorously observes, “You can fake an orgasm, but not a good mood. Isn’t that crazy? You know what’s cool about women? They don’t commit mass shootings. Shout out for not doing that. That is mostly men, right? Women will murder their husbands or boyfriends, but they are not killing strangers. I think men and women kill the way they make love – Men are like, ‘I will kill anything,’ and women are like, ‘I got to get to know you first. So…You want to get murdered by me, how about putting a little work in.’” Similarly, Naomi Ekperigin shares her humorous struggle to find a female therapist who fits her criteria, eliciting laughs with her witty remarks about not wanting to pay money to talk to a man.
While there are plenty of laughs in these three episodes, it’s hard to ignore the fact that Dave himself seems to be funnier than the featured comedians. It may be premature to judge, given that we’re only three episodes into the first season, but a special featuring Letterman himself would undoubtedly be more captivating.
Verdict: Stream it! “That’s My Time With David Letterman” is short, enjoyable, and promises more laughs to come.
