Thandakaaranyam Review :-

The anger is genuine, but the cause is hollow. Murugan (Kalaiyarasan), pushed out of the forest department by a corrupt ranger (Aruldoss) and fixer (Muthukumar), dreams of status and a future with Priya (Vinsu Rachel Sam). Alongside Rupesh (Bala Saravanan), he joins the ISGS in Jharkhand, where new recruits are initially registered as “surrendered Naxals.” Under the harsh supervision of drill master Ustad (Yuvan Mayilsamy), Murugan’s early clashes with Amitabh (Shabeer Kallarakkal) slowly turn into trust. He soon discovers the first selection list has already been executed and attempts to escape with the second. Meanwhile, back home, his brother Sadayan (Attakathi Dinesh) takes matters into his own hands, seeking revenge against the colluding cop–land mafia. The breakout attempt fails, the trainees are marked as traitors and shot, and the sham camp’s deadly truth is exposed.

What succeeds is the portrayal of the camp as a process. The film carefully captures the drills, punishments, the grueling 8 km run, and even a kitchen scuffle that leads to a collective penalty. Power dynamics are shown through language barriers and control over food distribution, rather than grand speeches. The relationship between Murugan and Amitabh provides the film’s clearest emotional thread, evolving from rivalry to a bond forged through shared hardships. Shabeer Kallarakkal’s subtle performance allows small gestures to carry the weight, making their eventual alliance feel genuine and free of sentimentality.

The forest subplot weakens the film’s overall focus. Sadayan’s killings are edited like over-the-top heroic moments, clashing with the story’s somber tone of state-engineered violence. An early attempt on Murugan’s life is quickly discarded, and several key plot twists arrive without building much tension. Most pivotal scenes are presented plainly, lacking suspense or emotional weight. Additionally, in an effort to maintain rawness, more than half the film is filled with characters tormenting one another, which eventually becomes repetitive and loses its impact. Justin Prabhakaran’s score complements the camp scenes well but goes overboard during the revenge sequences.

Thandakaaranyam Trailor :-

The performances largely hold the film together. Kalaiyarasan brings authentic physicality to the training journey, Bala Saravanan plays a timid yet devoted companion, and Riythvika grounds the story on the home front. However, the political message remains unstable—the horror is evident, but the film’s stance on it is uncertain.
