For decades, humanity has been locked in a brutal war against an army of AI machines. The conflict began in 1997, when an AI named Skynet achieved self-awareness.

In a desperate bid to change the course of history, a soldier from the future (Sonoya Mizuno) is sent back to 1997 to protect Malcolm Lee (André Holland), a scientist who is developing a crucial AI that holds the key to humanity’s survival against the relentless onslaught.

Terminator Zero (Netflix) Review :-

Inspired by James Cameron’s Terminator universe and penned by Mattson Tomlin, the sci-fi action anime series Terminator Zero relocates the battle to Japan. As Judgment Day looms, scientist Malcolm Lee (André Holland) is intensely focused on perfecting his latest creation, an AI named Kokoro (Rosario Dawson). Kokoro is engineered to counteract Skynet, the US-based AI poised to unleash a devastating attack on humanity.

Back home, Malcolm’s three children—Kenta (Armani Jackson), Hiro (Carter Rockwood), and Reika (Gideon Adlon)—feel neglected by their father’s workaholic and impatient nature. Their lives brighten when their nanny, Misaki (Sumalee Montano), introduces a robotic cat named Koneko. In Japan, robots like Koneko and INNOs, robotic assistants in shops and hospitals, are commonplace. However, Malcolm is irked by the presence of Koneko and demands it be returned.

While Malcolm is at work, Reika, rebelling against her father, runs away with Koneko, prompting Hiro and Kenta to search for her. The children find themselves in grave danger as a Terminator (Timothy Olyphant) from 2022 travels through time to stop Malcolm from activating Kokoro. Eiko (Sonoya Mizuno), a resistance soldier, also travels back to protect Malcolm and warn him about the dangerous consequences of his work on Kokoro, based on her future experiences.

In the lab, Malcolm must persuade Kokoro to side with humanity, as she is designed with free will and is hesitant to become a weapon. Meanwhile, Skynet’s nuclear attack is imminent, adding urgency to their mission.

Over eight episodes, Terminator Zero weaves through multiple timelines, including the present (1997), the past, and the future, using time travel, flashbacks, and flash-forwards to reveal new layers of the story. Time is treated as a fluid concept, exemplified by a scene where the Prophet explains to Eiko that traveling to the past creates a new timeline rather than revisiting ‘the past’. This nuanced approach to time travel adds complexity to the narrative. The series also explores deep philosophical themes about human nature, including the paradox of waging wars on oneself, economic oppression, and the creation of weapons of mass destruction, all while focusing on human-centric concerns.

The haunting background score enhances the sense of foreboding tension throughout.

The animation is visually captivating, complemented by sharp dialogue and intense, gory action sequences.
