Lately, the debate surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) versus human intelligence and its potential impact on job markets has been a hot topic. In this romantic comedy by writer-director duo Amit Joshi and Aradhana Sah, we explore just how close to reality a romance with a robot can get, and whether any of it holds true.
Aryan Agnihotri, a robotics engineer, travels to the US to work on a new project for his aunt and boss, Urmila (played by Dimple Kapadia). There, he encounters Sifra, Urmila’s creation designed to make Aryan fall in love with her. And fall in love he does. However, when Aryan learns the truth about Sifra’s identity, he is outraged at being used as a mere test subject. Despite this, he finds himself inexplicably drawn to her and convinces his aunt to send Sifra to India to undergo the ultimate test — surviving amidst Aryan’s eccentric, marriage-obsessed family. The question of whether Aryan will find his happily ever after with the almost-perfect robot forms the crux of the story.
Amit Joshi and Aradhana Sah present a fresh, light-hearted concept infused with quirky situations. The humor lies in the absurdity of the scenarios encountered by the human-robot couple. However, the story takes its time to develop, with certain scenes, particularly those involving Aryan’s family warming up to Sifra, feeling a bit drawn out. The narrative gains momentum towards the end, following a significant twist.
While the concept is innovative, the story occasionally feels repetitive as it circles around its central premise. The film also touches upon themes of man versus machine and the responsible use of AI and robots, albeit briefly, before wrapping up abruptly.
The film succeeds in eliciting laughter, primarily through the reactions of its characters. The humor isn’t so much in the dialogue but in the delivery and timing, especially in Aryan’s interactions with his friend and colleague, Monty (played by Ashish Verma), who executes his goofy role with finesse.
The movie’s charm lies in its romantic aspect, with Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon sharing delightful on-screen chemistry. Kriti’s deadpan robotic portrayal and perfectly timed laughter are a source of amusement, while Shahid effortlessly embodies the role of a lovestruck, irreverent individual. Dharmendra as Shahid’s grandfather adds a lovable touch, and Dimple Kapadia delivers a stellar performance as always. The soundtrack, composed by Sachin-Jigar, Tanishk Bagchi, and Mitraz, is a highlight, particularly the title track and “Laal Peeli Ankhiyan.”
In an era dominated by mega-scale action films, “Teri Baaton Mein Aise Uljha Jiya” offers a refreshing concept infused with humor and catchy music. While the situational comedy may feel repetitive at times, the film ultimately delivers an entertaining experience when it hits its mark.
