Tell Me Lies Season 2 (Hulu) Review
Tell Me Lies – Season 2 Episode 1
In the premiere of Tell Me Lies Season 2, Episode 1, the scene is set at Bree and Evan’s engagement party in 2015. Bree excitedly shares stories of her college romance with Evan and her friendships with Lucy and Pippa. Meanwhile, Lucy is preoccupied with her ex, Stephen, and his fiancée Lydia, who is also her former best friend. Although Bree invites everyone to stay over, Lucy and Bree decide they need to head home.
Feeling unsettled, Lucy steps out for some fresh air but ends up encountering Lydia in the powder room. Their meeting is tense as Lydia confronts Lucy, expressing that she’s trying to remain calm for Stephen but will never forgive Lucy for the past.
The episode flashes back to 2008, capturing Lydia and Lucy spending the summer together before Lucy returns to college for the new academic year. Lydia does her best to lift Lucy’s spirits after her breakup with Stephen and asks her to look out for her brother, Chris, who will be attending Baird College with Lucy. Meanwhile, Bree sends Lucy a photo of herself with Evan, which makes Lucy feel guilty about their past encounter.
In a parallel storyline, Diana introduces Stephen to her father. The atmosphere between the two men is tense, with Stephen attempting to assert himself. However, Diana’s father accuses Stephen of being manipulative and warns him not to create trouble for Diana. As the summer ends, students head back to college.
Lucy, Bree, and Pippa reconnect at the dorms, catching up on each other’s lives. Meanwhile, Stephen shows Wrigley the new iPhone that Diana’s dad gave him. Evan arrives to greet his friends, and tension flares between him and Stephen. Evan invites the guys to check out the apartment he’s sharing with Bree and inquires about Drew.
Wrigley sidesteps questions about his brother and leaves Evan and Stephen to talk. Stephen informs Evan that Wrigley is struggling with issues involving Drew and requests that Evan refrain from discussing the events of the previous year.
That evening, Bree spends time with Lucy and Pippa in their dorm room as they prepare to go out. Bree mentions that Evan has been acting strangely, but Lucy tries to reassure her, suggesting it might be nothing. Bree then drops the news that Evan will be joining them along with Wrigley and Stephen. Lucy feels uneasy and anxious but gets dressed to head to the club with her friends. Pippa is nervous about meeting Wrigley when Chris arrives to greet Lucy.
Lucy introduces Chris to her friends just as Evan and his friend Leo show up. Evan introduces Leo to the group and then takes Bree aside. Lucy and Pippa find themselves on the other side of the party, where Stephen and Diana make their entrance. Lucy starts a conversation with Leo, while Pippa mingles with Chris. Lucy later finds Evan alone and brings up their past hook-up.
They agree to keep their encounter a secret from Bree. Lucy then runs into Stephen, and they share their first conversation in months. The interaction is awkward, with Stephen suggesting Lucy is only pretending to dislike him. Lucy asks him to stop trying to gaslight her and walks away.
The next morning, Bree visits the college office and cleverly persuades the administrator to let her enroll in a full class, all while Professor Oliver observes her actions. Later, Bree informs Evan that she will be spending time with Lucy and cancels their dinner plans, which upsets him. When Stephen arrives and attempts to greet Bree, she ignores him and walks away.
Evan confides in Stephen about his relationship issues, admitting that he has cheated on Bree, though he leaves out the fact that it was with Lucy. Stephen tries to console Evan, reassuring him that making mistakes is part of life. Meanwhile, Lucy goes to Professor Marianne’s house to express her gratitude. As Lucy talks with the professor, Bree steps outside to reply to Evan’s flirtatious text and unexpectedly encounters Professor Oliver.
She tries to cover up her reasons for being outside, claiming she was just having a smoke. Professor Oliver shares a cigarette with Bree, and they discuss her deceitful maneuver with the admin. After their conversation, Bree sends a flirtatious text back to Evan. Meanwhile, inside Professor Marianne’s house, Lucy and Diana have an awkward encounter.
Diana tells Lucy that she has a deep history with Stephen that Lucy isn’t a part of and asks her to stay out of their business. Lucy responds that she knows a lot about Stephen and then leaves. The next morning, Diana recounts her conversation with Lucy to Stephen, who dismisses it, and the two end up having sex.
In Marianne’s class, Lucy starts laughing uncontrollably when a student reads a poem. Overwhelmed, she gets up and leaves the classroom, only to have an emotional breakdown outside. Bree suggests that Lucy should talk to Marianne about what’s troubling her. Lucy returns inside and apologizes to Marianne, who hugs her as Lucy breaks down. Lucy confesses that she’s been struggling with someone and having a hard time moving on.

Marianne advises Lucy not to bottle up her emotions and offers her extra credit for helping transcribe her upcoming novel. At lunch, Lucy shares this news with her friends, who are thrilled for her. The group then spends time with Leo, while Stephen watches Lucy interact with him and grows envious. Stephen approaches their table and provokes Lucy by bringing up their past relationship, causing tension among everyone present.
As Stephen continues to belittle her, the atmosphere becomes increasingly uncomfortable. Later, Lucy heads to the gym to release her frustration but ends up storming over to Stephen’s dorm room. In a fit of anger, she throws and shatters his iPhone, demanding that he stop trying to provoke her. Lucy threatens to expose his actions with Macy from the previous year and warns him not to mention the letter again.
The episode concludes with a flash-forward to Bree and Evan’s engagement party. Lucy wishes Bree a good night before heading home. As Pippa also prepares to leave, she encounters her girlfriend, Diana, marking the end of the episode.
Final Thoughts
This group is so toxic and entangled that it’s mind-blowing. The episode’s conclusion reveals that Pippa’s “fling” with Bree and Lucy is actually Diana. Additionally, Bree seems to be hiding something from Evan, just as he concealed his affair with Lucy.
Throughout the episode, Stephen’s behavior and the significance of his iPhone had me seething, so Lucy’s act of smashing it felt like a personal triumph. With Stephen and Lydia now together, it’s clear that more drama is on the horizon. I’m curious about what led Lydia to betray her childhood friend, especially given Stephen’s history with Lucy. I’m eager to see how this mess unfolds in the next episode.
Tell Me Lies – Season 2 Episode 2
Episode 2 of Tell Me Lies Season 2 opens with a flashback to 2008, where Lucy, Pippa, and Evan are celebrating Bree’s birthday at a restaurant. The girls present Bree with matching T-shirts, while Evan surprises her with a pair of diamond earrings. Bree is overwhelmed by the gift and struggles to express her gratitude.
After the gift exchange, Lucy and Pippa step away to give Bree and Evan some privacy and end up hanging out with Leo, whom they meet at the restaurant.
As Bree and Evan discuss the tension between them, their conversation escalates into an argument. Evan asks for some time apart and leaves the restaurant. Bree, feeling unsettled, watches Lucy and Pippa chatting with Leo before deciding to head home. On her way, Bree encounters Professor Oliver, while Leo and Lucy exchange phone numbers.
The two strike up a conversation, and Bree confides in Oliver about her argument with her boyfriend over the expensive earrings he gave her. Oliver listens empathetically and understands her frustration. Bree asks Oliver for another cigarette, revealing that she doesn’t actually smoke. She then seeks his opinion on the earrings, and their moment deepens when Oliver helps her remove one of the earrings.
The following morning, Evan and Stephen discuss Bree’s birthday party. Stephen expresses his displeasure about Lucy’s continued presence around his friends. Evan opens up about his fight with Bree and his growing frustration with their constant arguments. Stephen advises Evan to come clean to Bree about his affair, suggesting that honesty might be the best way to resolve their issues.
He suggests that if Evan envisions a future with Bree, he should rid himself of the guilt from his past actions. Stephen mentions that Bree might already be aware of the truth and could be waiting for him to come clean.
Meanwhile, Bree confides in Lucy and Pippa about her feelings of being misunderstood by Evan. She shares how the experience of sharing a cigarette with Oliver, despite not being a smoker, felt significant. Bree also describes the emotional impact of Oliver removing the earring from her ear. The girls tease Bree about having a teacher flirt with her. At the same time, Diana arrives at Stephen’s dorm and encounters Wrigley’s tutor, Chloe.
Diana discovers that Wrigley was involved with Chloe and asks him to keep their brief encounter a secret from Stephen to avoid making him uncomfortable.
Meanwhile, Lucy goes on a date with Leo, and they quickly connect. Leo inquires about Stephen and the confession he made in the cafeteria, but Lucy dismisses the topic. As they bond over their shared sense of humor, Leo and Lucy share a kiss.
Back at their house, Evan and Bree attempt to resolve their argument. Evan confesses that he cheated on Bree with another woman, admitting his infidelity. Bree is enraged and accuses Evan of gaslighting her into thinking she was at fault. She also confronts him about his attempt to manipulate her with the expensive earrings.
Bree leaves to process Evan’s confession, and Evan anxiously wonders if she will end their relationship. Meanwhile, Wrigley invites Stephen to join him at a party that night. Stephen inquires about his football team and discovers that Wrigley is no longer practicing with them due to an injury. Feeling sympathetic, Stephen agrees to go out with Wrigley.
Back at the dorm, Lucy returns to find Pippa comforting Bree. She is taken aback to learn about Evan’s confession but is relieved that Lucy’s name wasn’t mentioned. Bree insists that Pippa and Lucy attend the college party while she takes some time alone to reflect on the situation.
At the party, Pippa leaves Leo and Lucy to get a drink and meets a classmate named Quinn, who asks for her number. Meanwhile, Chris arrives and strikes up a conversation with Pippa while Lucy and Leo share a passionate kiss. Bree, feeling distressed, decides to return to the restaurant where she last saw Oliver. She finds him at the bar and takes a seat next to him.
Bree confides in Oliver about having one of the worst days she can remember. Oliver offers to buy her a drink to lift her spirits. Meanwhile, Wrigley and Stephen are at home playing video games, discussing Drew’s attempts to avoid Wrigley. Stephen mentions that Lucy broke his phone during a confrontation but doesn’t explain what caused her anger.
At the party, Lucy observes Pippa and Chris kissing. Back at the restaurant, Bree continues her conversation with Oliver, discussing Evan’s infidelity. Oliver shares some of his own experiences, including how he married his first wife in college and her subsequent death before marrying Marianne. Bree feels sympathy for Oliver and asks if he is happy with Marianne. She flirts with him, but Oliver gently insists that they should not cross any boundaries.
After they leave the restaurant, Oliver plants a kiss on Bree’s cheek. Bree reciprocates, kissing Oliver back on the cheek, and they share a moment. Embarrassed when Oliver tries to stop her, Bree rushes back home and has sex with Evan. Meanwhile, at the party, Diana checks on Pippa, who’s throwing up from excessive drinking. She kicks Chris out of the room and asks Lucy to help with Pippa.
Lucy and Diana attempt to nurse Pippa, trying to get her something to drink. They take Pippa to the dorm room, where Diana confides in Lucy her suspicion that Chris was forcing himself on Pippa. Lucy thanks Diana and puts Pippa to bed. The following morning, Lucy talks to Pippa and discovers she has no memory of hooking up with Chris. When Lucy gently asks if Pippa thinks she might have been drugged, Pippa becomes upset, feeling coddled.
Pippa asks Lucy to back off and keep the situation a secret from Bree. Meanwhile, Bree tells Evan that she’s willing to forgive him and pretends that she has also cheated on him. She asks if he can forgive her for what she supposedly did, but Evan refuses. Bree is repulsed by his reaction and admits she lied about the cheating.
Diana is visibly shaken by the events involving Pippa but manages to pull herself together when Stephen arrives. Meanwhile, Lucy and Leo are having coffee together when a man becomes angry with Lucy for spilling his drink. Lucy is taken aback when Leo punches the man and leaves the coffee shop without a word.
Lucy attends her class, where Professor Banks introduces Stephen as the new Teaching Assistant. Meanwhile, Bree, dressed and composed, goes to Oliver’s cabin and asks him to kiss her. Oliver agrees. Meanwhile, Pippa, still shaken by the previous night’s events, heads to the laundromat to wash the clothes she wore to the party. The episode concludes with Pippa at the laundromat, processing the aftermath of the night’s events.
Final Thoughts
The sexual tension between Oliver and Bree had me hoping for their hookup from the start of the episode. Now that it has happened, I doubt that Evan and Bree will continue with their marriage. I’m also concerned that Bree might discover Evan’s affair with Lucy, which could end her friendship with Lucy as well.
Stephen’s manipulative behavior continues to frustrate me this season, especially as he seems determined to make Lucy uncomfortable to the point of breaking down. I hope Lucy gets fed up and exposes the truth about the accident Stephen caused, which led to Macy’s death.
It’s clear that Lydia is upset with Lucy for revealing the truth about Chris sexually assaulting Pippa, and this could be the root of their fallout. Diana seems to have taken the incident personally, which might be what brings her and Lydia together as friends and potentially leads to a romantic
