Tell Me Lies Season 2 (Hulu) Review

Tell Me Lies – Season 2 Episode 5

Episode 5 of Tell Me Lies Season 2 opens with Diana dressed for Halloween, struggling to hold back tears. She encounters Pippa in the library, and they engage in conversation. Pippa expresses her gratitude to Diana for helping to stop Wrigley’s friends from bullying her, and unexpectedly feels a growing attraction to Diana.

Meanwhile, Bree leaves class early, prompting Marianne to ask Lucy for a moment to talk. Marianne points out that Lucy’s low GPA is due to dropping a class, and Lucy explains that Stephen’s enrollment in her class forced her to make that decision. Marianne empathizes and offers to help Lucy improve her grade. During their chat, Lucy learns that Marianne is home alone this weekend because Oliver is away, sparking her suspicion about Bree.

Later that day, Lucy meets with Lydia and shares her concerns about Stephen trying to interfere with her classes. Back in the dorm, Lucy introduces Bree to Lydia while packing for a trip. Bree mentions that she’s going away with Oliver and asks Lucy to keep it a secret from Pippa.

Meanwhile, Stephen’s sister Sadie visits him for Halloween as he reviews his LSAT scores. Stephen is thrilled with his results, but his excitement is tempered when Diana arrives and reveals that she didn’t do well on her LSAT. She tells Stephen she won’t be able to apply with him, and they agree to discuss the situation further once Sadie leaves.

Meanwhile, Oliver checks into the hotel room he booked for himself and Bree. Bree asks him to take her to the bar for a date. Back in the dorm, Lucy, Lydia, and Pippa hang out with Leo when Chris arrives to see Lydia, creating an awkward tension for Pippa. She tries to mask her discomfort by assuring Lucy that she’s fine with Chris being around.

Diana, trying to regain her composure, heads to a Halloween party with Stephen, Sadie, and Wrigley, but she feels out of place. Similarly, Pippa is uneasy at the party because of Chris’s presence. Meanwhile, Oliver enjoys a romantic date with Bree at the bar, where she uses a fake ID to get alcohol. Bree takes the opportunity to ask Oliver about Marianne and tries to learn more about his first wife.

However, Oliver refuses to discuss his first wife with Bree. He’s taken aback when he discovers that Lucy knows about their affair, but Bree urges him to trust her. The bartender calls Oliver out for dating a minor, prompting him to kiss Bree in front of the bartender to make a point, leaving Bree feeling embarrassed by the display.

Meanwhile, at the party, Lydia confronts Stephen about breaking Lucy’s heart, shocking Sadie, who didn’t know Stephen had dated anyone else. Diana finds Pippa alone in the crowd and approaches her. Lydia later informs Lucy that she confronted Stephen and scared him off.

Lucy asks her childhood friend to stay out of her business when Lydia brings up how Lucy once punched Stephen in the face. Sadie then asks Stephen to grab her some sneakers from the dorm, and Evan decides to join him to escape his one-night stand. Diana leaves as well, and Pippa chooses to exit the party with Wrigley to avoid Chris.

In the dorm room, Stephen opens up about his dysfunctional family and how his mother has cut him off. Evan notes that Stephen’s family situation reminds him of Bree, expressing how much he misses her. In response, Stephen offers Evan some relationship advice. Meanwhile, Pippa and Wrigley are hanging out in her dorm room, and Pippa encourages Wrigley to reach out to his brother if he feels the need to talk.

Chris brings up Pippa, which annoys Lucy. Just then, Sadie arrives and calls Lucy out for stalking Stephen. Lucy retaliates, calling Stephen manipulative and a liar, which upsets Sadie. Diana intervenes and takes Sadie away, while Lydia praises her friend for standing up for herself.

The next morning, Oliver looks through the photos Bree took and compliments her photography. He also apologizes for his behavior at the bar. They start making out and eventually hook up.

Meanwhile, Lucy is taken aback to see Wrigley leaving her dorm room. Pippa reassures Lucy that she wasn’t hooking up with Wrigley. Just then, Lydia informs them that a girl from Chris’s class has accused him of rape. Lydia tries to defend her brother, but Lucy stands up for the girl, leading to an argument. Pippa decides to excuse herself from the conversation.

Meanwhile, Stephen and Diana discuss her LSAT scores. Diana mentions she wouldn’t mind retaking the exam next year and wonders if Stephen will wait for her. Just then, Wrigley enters the dorm room and reveals he was at Pippa’s dorm the night before. Stephen becomes territorial over Wrigley, but Wrigley tells him to back off.

Sadie brings up her conversation with Lucy, which frustrates Stephen. He attempts to call Lucy, but she doesn’t answer. When he runs into Lydia, he vents about the things Lucy said to annoy her. Stephen then sends Lucy a voice note that scares her.

Lydia arrives at the dorm, and Lucy tries to apologize and defend herself. Lydia remains calm, ignoring Stephen’s earlier comment. However, when Sadie listens to the voice note Stephen sent to Lucy, she becomes frightened. Stephen tries to explain himself to Sadie, but she is horrified by what she hears. Despite his attempts to calm her, Sadie decides to pack her things and leave.

Later, Lucy spends the night with Leo, and they enjoy a fun evening together. Diana visits Pippa in her dorm room and helps her bleach her hair, bringing up the letter written by Chris’s victim. Diana notices Pippa’s reaction to the topic and quickly tries to shift her attention as the episode comes to a close.

Final Thoughts

If there’s one character in Tell Me Lies that really makes my blood boil, it’s Stephen. It was so satisfying to witness the look of shock and fear on his sister Sadie’s face when she heard the voice note he sent to Lucy. The fear in her eyes, especially as she recognizes their abusive mother in Stephen, was palpable, and it was completely understandable for Stephen to panic.

I can see Lydia and Lucy’s friendship unraveling once the truth about Chris assaulting Pippa comes to light. There’s definitely a spark between Diana and Pippa that could blossom into something more. It also seems likely that Diana deliberately underperformed on her LSAT to create some distance from Stephen.

With Diana and her father’s support slipping away, Stephen will probably try to manipulate Lydia to get back at Lucy while also trying to elevate his social status. I feel for Wrigley, who still has feelings for Pippa and genuinely wants to become a better person for her sake!

Tell Me Lies – Season 2 Episode 6

Episode 6 of Tell Me Lies Season 2 opens in 2015 at Bree and Evan’s rehearsal dinner. In the powder room, Bree is on the phone, asking someone to let her move on with her life. Evan walks in, and Bree quickly lies, claiming she was just smoking a cigarette.

Meanwhile, Lucy is searching for someone at the party when Max approaches her. She heads over to Bree, who informs her that Lydia won’t be attending. Stephen is chatting over drinks with Chris and Wrigley when Diana arrives, leaving Lucy and Bree curious about how she learned about the event. To their surprise, Pippa joins Diana and kisses her, shocking everyone in the room.

Pippa introduces Diana as her girlfriend to Lucy and Bree, then steps away, leaving the three friends to chat. Pippa shares her feelings for Diana with Lucy and Bree while they sit together with their partners. Stephen, as Evan’s best man, raises a toast to the couple, celebrating their whirlwind romance.

Later that night, Lucy texts Stephen, asking him to meet her by the pool. When Stephen arrives, he catches Lucy and Max in the act, realizing her plan. The scene then shifts back to 2008, where Leo and Lucy are together in his dorm room. Lucy expresses her relief at being able to stay in due to the weather, admitting she was dreading Thanksgiving with her family.

Leo gets upset while discussing his family, particularly his father, which worries Lucy as she notices his reaction. Meanwhile, at the cafeteria, Bree is on the phone with Oliver when Evan and Wrigley arrive. Evan attempts to engage Bree in small talk, mistakenly believing she has forgiven him. In an effort to reconnect, he decides to host a Friendsgiving party and asks Wrigley to invite Pippa and her friends.

At the same time, Bree shares with Lucy how happy she is with Oliver. Pippa arrives and asks if they want to join the Friendsgiving party. Bree agrees, and Lucy follows suit after confirming that Stephen won’t be attending. Pippa’s enthusiasm leads Bree to wonder if she’s involved with Wrigley, prompting Pippa to become defensive.

The episode shifts to Diana confiding in Stephen that she doesn’t want to go home for Thanksgiving due to a fight with her dad. Despite Stephen’s attempts to calm her, she stands firm, refusing to apologize just for the sake of his support. Meanwhile, Wrigley tries to reach Drew but ends up leaving him a voice message, urging him to get in touch.

At Evan’s apartment, he’s busy preparing for the Friendsgiving gathering when Molly arrives unexpectedly. Concerned about Bree encountering Molly at the event, Evan asks Wrigley for help, but neither of them can find the courage to ask Molly to leave.

Moments later, Lucy, Leo, Pippa, and Bree arrive. Bree and Molly have an awkward exchange when Bree steps away to the restroom, where she takes a provocative selfie and sends it to Oliver. Meanwhile, Evan approaches Bree to check in on her.

Coincidentally, Stephen and Diana arrive at the Friendsgiving gathering, making Lucy anxious. Wrigley admits he invited them, prompting Leo to tell Lucy to relax. Throughout the evening, Lucy makes an effort to avoid Stephen, who continues to provoke her by bringing up Becca and her history with Leo.. Leo encourages Lucy to dismiss Stephen, knowing he loves to stir up trouble.

Meanwhile, Pippa spends time with Diana, which raises eyebrows for Bree and Lucy. The two step outside for some fresh air, with Pippa following them. Bree mentions how unusually nice Pippa has been to Diana, which seems out of character. Back inside, Bree and Molly chat about Molly’s relationship with Evan. Bree insists she’s not interested in Stephen’s romantic life, revealing that she’s seeing someone herself.

As the night progresses, tension in the room escalates. Evan is taken aback to discover that Bree is seeing someone. To lighten the mood among the couples, Wrigley suggests they play a game of Slap Shots, where one person asks another to take a shot before slapping them across the face. The game begins playfully, with Bree slapping Lucy, Lucy slapping Wrigley, and so on.

However, when it’s Pippa’s turn to slap Diana, she hesitates. Stephen tries to provoke Leo, but Leo remains calm and composed, taking a slap from Stephen without retaliating. Evan gives Bree a shot and attempts to slap her but ends up gently holding her cheek instead. Molly, feeling upset, storms off, prompting Evan to chase after her.

Meanwhile, as Lucy and Leo set the dinner table, Stephen confronts them. He reveals that Leo’s ex-girlfriend, Becca, cheated on him with Stephen, leaving Lucy shocked and upset that Leo had kept this secret from her. She becomes even more frustrated upon learning that Diana was aware of it all along.

Leo tries to calm Lucy down, but Stephen claims she’s obsessed with him, citing the voicemail she sent to Sadie as evidence. This infuriates Lucy, and an argument ensues, with Lucy bringing up Diana. Diana interjects, asking to be left out of the conflict and stating that she made it easier for Stephen to mistreat her.

In a moment of frustration, Lucy slaps Diana. Upset, Leo decides to leave the gathering, with Lucy following him in an attempt to discuss his issues. She confronts him about hiding the truth about his ex cheating on him with Stephen, expressing her distrust due to his anger issues.

Finally, Leo opens up to Lucy about his father’s physical abuse and how difficult it’s been for him to break that cycle. He points out that Lucy’s comments brought up the worst parts of his life to tear him down. He decides to end things with her, suggesting that she should focus on her own problems.Returning to Evan’s apartment to grab her bag, Lucy apologizes to Diana before leaving.

Evan pulls Bree aside to ask if she’s seeing someone. She admits she’s dating an older man and insists that things are serious between them. Concerned, Evan expresses his worry that she’s seeking a father figure in this relationship and fears the man may be taking advantage of her. Bree, furious at his insinuation, storms off as Evan returns to the dinner table.

After dinner, Pippa checks in on Diana, and they discuss Stephen. Pippa mentions that Stephen has been rude to her, but Diana brushes it off. Later that night, Lucy is in bed when Bree brings her some food. As Lucy sobs over her breakup with Leo, she opens up to Bree about her feelings. Meanwhile, Pippa and Wrigley lie together, and she texts Diana, who is spending the night with Stephen.

The next morning, Evan talks to Stephen about how people often get upset with him when he tries to help. Bree receives a call from Oliver, and their conversation turns romantic, leading her to dismiss the idea of talking to Evan. Lucy runs into Stephen and declares that she’s done fighting with him. The episode concludes with her in tears, pleading with him to stop.

Final Thoughts

I completely agree with Leo’s observation that Stephen has a way of draining the energy from a room. Every conflict in Lucy’s life over the past two seasons has stemmed from Stephen and his obsession with her. The episode’s final moments clearly show that Lucy is fed up with Stephen, who keeps ruining things for her simply because he can’t have her. It’s a classic case of manipulation.

The show is definitely taking an intriguing turn, but I wonder if it’s wise for Bree to be so open about dating someone significantly older than her. It feels like she’s putting a target on her back. At this rate, it seems likely that Bree will end up heartbroken by Oliver, who might drop her without hesitation when it comes to prioritizing his family.
