Tehran is a gripping spy thriller that transforms a lesser-known 2012 incident into a high-stakes cross-border drama. The film opens with a seemingly isolated car bomb outside the Iranian embassy in Delhi, tragically taking a child’s life. But this event is just the surface of a complex geopolitical web involving Iran, Israel, and India. Debut director Arun Gopalan sets the tone with a sharp, impactful voice-over explaining the historic rift between Israel and Iran, quickly launching into an explosive beginning. Throughout, Gopalan maintains a tight pace, rarely letting the tension ease.
The story centers on Special Officer Rajeev Kumar (John Abraham), who is drawn into a covert mission that leads him to Tehran. John Abraham delivers a steady, controlled performance—intense and focused, portraying a hero who communicates more through actions than words. Manushi Chhillar (S.I. Divya) offers a strong, no-nonsense presence, while Neeru Bajwa (Shailja) adds depth to a character that might have otherwise felt one-dimensional. Together, they bring a believable human element to the story.
Writers Ritesh Shah and Ashish P. Verma craft a layered, intricate plot that requires careful attention. The film doesn’t handhold its audience—you need to actively piece together the story. This makes Tehran rewarding for fans of smart, detailed thrillers, but it might feel confusing or overwhelming for viewers seeking a simpler, lighter experience.
