‘Tabbar,’ meaning ‘family’ in Punjabi, unfolds as a captivating eight-part series, staying true to its title. Set in the quaint village of Deep Nagar in Jalandhar, Punjab, co-writers Harman Wadala and Sandeep Jain, along with director Ajitpal Singh, immerse the narrative in the aftermath of a tragic event from Singh’s own family history.
Narrated through the perspectives of various characters, the storyline underscores the significance of familial unity, particularly during challenging times. The central figure is Omkar Singh (Pavan Malhotra), a retired police constable now managing a small Kirana Store (grocery shop) to make ends meet. Omkar deeply cares for his wife Sargun (Supriya Pathak), going above and beyond to tend to her needs, from managing her diabetes medication to assisting with household chores. Their two sons, Harpreet aka Happy (Gagan Arora), diligently preparing for the IPS in Delhi, and Tegi (Sahil Mehta), a college student aspiring to be a social influencer, complete the family.
However, the dynamics within this household undergo a drastic shift when Happy accidentally shoots Maheep Sodhi (Rachit Bahal), brother of local politician Ajeet Singh Sodhi (Ranvir Shorey). Faced with the fear and uncertainty triggered by this high-profile incident, Omkar is driven to extraordinary lengths to protect his son, even as the family grapples with mounting pressure and scrutiny from law enforcement.
Each tightly-woven episode of ‘Tabbar,’ edited by Parikshhit Jha and spanning approximately 35-45 minutes, oscillates between dramatic extremes while maintaining a delicate balance. Although the narrative occasionally falters, particularly in its portrayal of the family’s efforts to conceal their secrets, the ethical and emotional conflicts that ensue as the central characters navigate their predicament remain compelling. Despite encountering setbacks, the performances remain consistent, with characters continuing to captivate viewers.
While the initial episodes may seem slow-paced in establishing the premise, the latter half intensifies the narrative, culminating in a gripping climax. Pavan Malhotra delivers a commendable performance as Omkar Singh, anchoring the series with conviction and nuance. Supriya Pathak’s portrayal of Sargun exudes resilience and vulnerability, showcasing her evolution amidst adversity. The attention to detail, from cultural nuances to authentic set design, enriches the viewing experience, while Sneha Khanwalkar’s evocative music heightens emotional resonance.
Gagan Arora shines in his role as Happy, infusing the character with depth and complexity. Despite the underdeveloped subplot involving his relationship with Palak (Nupur Nagpal), Arora’s portrayal remains compelling. Paramvir Singh Cheema’s portrayal of police officer Lucky adds a layer of intrigue, while Ranvir Shorey delivers a standout performance as the multifaceted Ajeet Singh Sodhi. Ali Mughal’s portrayal of Multan, Ajeet’s confidant, further enhances the narrative tension.
In essence, ‘Tabbar’ thrives on its plot twists and strong performances, particularly those of Supriya Pathak and Pavan Malhotra. While the storyline delves into dark themes, the series remains a riveting family drama that merits binge-watching.
