The dark, oppressive atmosphere of Suzhal 2 pulls viewers in from the very first episode. Picking up elements from its predecessor while introducing a new moral quandary, the second season follows SI Chakravarthy as he faces a case that hits dangerously close to home. With its sharp focus on societal issues, Suzhal masterfully creates a tense, gripping environment that keeps audiences hooked and questioning what will unfold next. The plot twists in this season are compelling, and while they may not be entirely new, the way the story unfolds keeps it fresh and intriguing.
The murder at the heart of the story is deeply intertwined with the cultural and religious festivities in Kaalipattinam, giving every event a layer of significant meaning. As Sakkarai struggles to piece together the mystery, it’s captivating to watch how the narrative unfolds. There’s barely a moment that doesn’t provoke thought, urging viewers to dig deeper into its hidden meanings—an impressive feat for both the story and the direction.

While I found Chellappa’s personal storyline with his family and Dhamu to be somewhat unnecessary—almost as if it were added just for the sake of it—the rest of the twists, especially those involving the girls, were unforgettable. The performances from the girls were exceptional, and the depth given to their roles made their struggles feel deeply personal.
Kathir and Aishwarya Rajesh return to their roles as Sakkarai and Nandini, and once again, they deliver outstanding performances. This season, Rajesh’s character takes more of a backseat, quietly awaiting justice in her case, but I never felt her storyline was unnecessary. Even in this subdued role, she remains a compelling presence. Kathir, on the other hand, continues to shine as Sakkarai. His portrayal is both empathetic and perceptive, and what stands out the most is his character’s willingness to learn and evolve. He understands Sakkarai so well that you can’t help but hang on to every word he says.

The series repeatedly challenges our sense of morality while shedding light on a critical issue in the world. While there are moments that feel a bit melodramatic and clichéd, the sequence in episode 8 that alternates between the Ashtakaali Festival and the jail is absolutely stunning, making up for nearly all the series’ minor flaws.

The second season of this Prime Video series is just as binge-worthy and offers a fantastic viewing experience.
