Director Rohit Shetty skillfully expands his cop universe, captivating audiences and loyal fans of the genre with each installment. Following the success of the “Singham” series led by Ajay Devgn and “Simmba” starring Ranveer Singh, “Sooryavanshi” storms onto the scene with Akshay Kumar in the titular role, delivering an extravaganza of fanfare, drama, and grand theatrics. Sooryavanshi’s introduction was subtly hinted at the end of “Simmba,” and the film embodies all the hallmarks of a Rohit Shetty spectacle, including attitude, style, showmanship, and star power.
Similar to “Simmba,” the narrative of this cop action saga is narrated by Ajay Devgn, who recounts Mumbai’s history of terrorist attacks from the 1993 serial blasts to the 2008 attacks on landmarks like The Taj Mahal Palace and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). As the story unfolds, a looming threat of another major attack emerges, orchestrated by activated sleeper cells from Lashkar using leftover RDX from the ’93 bombings.
DCP Veer Sooryavanshi emerges as the central figure, driven by a fierce determination to protect the city at all costs, even at the expense of his personal life, including his family—wife Riya (portrayed by Katrina Kaif) and son Aryan. Amidst a backdrop of cross-border tensions, the film delves into themes of revenge, exploring the age-old adage, ‘An eye for an eye, makes the world blind.’ While the storyline may adhere to familiar tropes and remain predictable, the action sequences, crafted by Rohit Shetty and Suniel Rodrigues, deliver high-octane thrills. Notably, the chase sequence between Veer and antagonist John (played by Sikander Kher) through the streets of Bangkok is a visual spectacle, reminiscent of iconic moments from Hollywood films.
However, “Sooryavanshi” isn’t without its clichés, and the film’s length could benefit from tighter editing, particularly in the first half. Nevertheless, the pace picks up post-interval, immersing viewers in a whirlwind of action-packed sequences.
Akshay Kumar shines in his role, delivering a powerhouse performance that justifies his portrayal of a super cop. From his charismatic entry to intense action sequences, Kumar commands the screen with his undeniable presence. Katrina Kaif impresses with her on-screen charisma, particularly in the iconic song ‘Tip Tip Barsa Paani,’ although comparisons to the original performer, Raveena Tandon, are inevitable.
The film receives a significant boost with the cameo appearances of Ajay Devgn and Ranveer Singh, reprising their roles as Bajirao Singham and Sangram Bhalerao, respectively. Their electrifying presence adds an extra layer of excitement to the narrative.
The ensemble cast, including Jackie Shroff, Gulshan Grover, Abhimanyu Singh, Kumud Mishra, and Nikitin Dheer, deliver commendable performances, contributing to the film’s overall impact. The background score effectively sets the mood, although the songs may not be particularly memorable.
In conclusion, “Sooryavanshi” marks Akshay Kumar’s successful takeover of the cop universe, offering audiences a bumper Diwali entertainer filled with high-voltage action. For fans of adrenaline-fueled action movies, this one is a must-watch!”
