Sonic The Hedgehog 3 should kick off with one burning question: Did they manage to get Jim Carrey to return for a third installment? After all, the star power assembled for this franchise over the years is impressive. What started as an experiment to adapt a video game into a live-action-animation movie, not just for dedicated fans but also for those who’d never seen the game’s opening screen, has blossomed into a successful franchise. The series has grown organically, with the slow-building, carefully crafted approach in the first two films keeping audiences engaged. The beauty of these films lies in their smart pacing and lack of excess, offering a fresh experience while leaving a lasting impression.
The Sonic franchise returns with its third installment, and guess what? They’ve managed to lure Jim Carrey out of retirement—talk about a casting win (if I were the agent, I’d be boasting from a mountaintop right now). Sonic The Hedgehog 3 finds itself at a crucial turning point, where it has to expand beyond the confines of a simple story and lay the foundation for a broader universe, full of possibilities and parallel narratives that go beyond the main timeline. The pressure on the third film is immense, as it can no longer afford to tell a small-scale story with a limited cast. The pace has to pick up to introduce new characters and plotlines, setting the stage for the future, especially as the makers look ahead to a fourth film.
The screenplay, written by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington, handles this balancing act with care. While there’s pressure to bring back familiar faces and introduce exciting new elements, they resist overloading the film with unnecessary clutter. Instead, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 ensures that every character has a purpose, contributing meaningfully to the story. The dynamic between Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails feels more like an Avengers-style team-up, with even the government recognizing their importance. The stakes are higher than ever, leaving no room for mistakes—especially with Keanu Reeves voicing the villain.
The story chosen for Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is compelling because it shows the hedgehog stepping up in a more mature way to save the day. There’s no room for trial and error this time around, as the villain is not just a human seeking their power, but a formidable force with a mission to destroy the planet. In the midst of all this, the evolving relationship between Robotnik and Agent Stone (Lee Majdoub) adds a unique emotional layer. They’ve grown beyond simple bad guys—Stone is searching for friendship, and Robotnik, too afraid to connect with anyone, is forced to confront his fears. Their bond is beautifully developed, showcasing them as more than just villains, but as human beings with real emotions. The chemistry between Jim Carrey and Lee Majdoub is electric, adding depth to their characters and bringing much of the emotional weight to the story.
While the film excels with the star power of Keanu, Jim, and Ben, it’s not without its flaws. Director Jeff Fowler manages his material well, but in trying to juggle so many elements, the film sometimes stretches itself too thin. This leads to a broad narrative that, at times, doesn’t quite evolve the way the filmmakers likely intended. For example, Shadow, a key villain, feels underutilized in the first half, missing the chance to make a significant impact early on.

Shadow doesn’t even remain much of a mystery for most of the film, only starting to truly shine as the final act approaches. Additionally, we’re left with little development for Knuckles and Tails, despite their significant roles in the future of the franchise. As for Commander Walters, their exit feels rather abrupt—almost as if a writer decided, “We don’t need this character anymore,” and simply cut them out without further explanation.
Final Thought
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is undoubtedly an enjoyable watch, but it doesn’t quite measure up to the strength of the first two films. This is disappointing, as we’ve seen many franchises stray off course over time, and it’s always a bit concerning when that happens.
