Snakes & Ladders (AmazonPrimeVideo) Review :-

Prime Video’s series Snakes and Ladders revolves around the unlikely premise that a group of middle schoolers can successfully execute a con that would stump most adults. Relying heavily on convenient plot armor to keep their parents and the police from discovering a body buried in Gilly’s backyard, the show stretches believability and bears an uncanny resemblance to Stranger Things—minus the Demogorgon and government conspiracies, of course.

The kids are a bit perplexing to follow. As an adult, it’s hard to accept that these young children disposed of a body, took selfies with a decomposing corpse to track down the guy’s accomplice, and even held one of their fathers captive because Gilly couldn’t bear to part with his parents. What I find most unbelievable is that these kids are portrayed as completely sane and well-adjusted individuals who prioritize their friendship above all else. I seriously doubt any middle schooler would be comfortable disposing of a dead body and plotting to catch a dangerous criminal in any situation.

It’s worth discussing how children are often depicted in shows as capable of achieving things that adults cannot. In Stranger Things, for example, a group of kids battles a monster emerging from a wall in a government facility, but that’s a sci-fi series centered on experimental creatures. In a crime-thriller set in a seemingly real world, it’s much harder to accept that children can pull off similar feats.

As the episodes progress, the series becomes increasingly convoluted, with a series of outrageous and implausible events that might leave viewers bewildered. While the overall sequence of events isn’t entirely unbelievable, the fact that it’s kids at the center of this chaos is shocking. I also found it hard to believe that no one around them seems to notice the bizarre situations they’re getting into while engaging in reckless behavior. Furthermore, the opportunity to explore the kids’ mental health and the impact of their traumatic experiences is overlooked, which is a missed opportunity.

Snakes & Ladders (AmazonPrimeVideo) Trailor :-

As a young adult show, there’s something to be said for its childish and silly moments. The series features genuinely thrilling scenes, and the interplay between Leo’s story arc and the kids’ adventures creates an engaging journey. While the twists and turns may stretch believability, they’re enjoyable to watch, and I can see younger viewers having a blast with this. Keeping the kids at the center of the narrative encourages us to root for their innocent motivations, no matter how improbable they may be.

Final Thought

Snakes and Ladders feels unrealistic and, therefore, unrelatable. The kids do a commendable job of embodying their characters, and it’s heartwarming to see them attempt to solve a crime. However, the overall scope feels a bit exaggerated for a children’s adventure, as the themes are quite dark and unsettling. Their seemingly impossible feats, all while riding bicycles, come across as absurd, and the seriousness with which these events unfold is unintentionally hilarious—but not in a good way.
