Sleeping Dogs (AmazonPrimeVideo) Review :-
Based on the crime novel The Book of Mirrors, Sleeping Dogs features Russell Crowe as Roy Freeman, a retired detective struggling with dementia. The film’s unique premise has Freeman re-investigating a crime he once solved, as if for the first time. While this concept is intriguing, it’s somewhat undercut by the ‘plot-convenient’ nature of Freeman’s illness, which conveniently recedes whenever the story needs to move forward.
The re-investigation is prompted by the looming execution of Isaac Samuel (Pacharo Mzembe), who was convicted of murdering Dr. Joseph Wieder (Marton Csokas) a decade earlier. Flashbacks reveal Samuel’s innocence—he was present at the crime scene but never saw the killer. Despite his deteriorating condition, Freeman takes it upon himself to reopen the case, seeking out his former partner, Jimmy Remis (Tommy Flanagan), who cautions him against digging up the past.

Freeman’s investigation begins with the late Richard Finn (Harry Greenwood), the author of a true crime memoir about the Wieder murder. Laura Baines (Karen Gillan), Finn’s partner and someone who was also close to Wieder, emerges as a key figure in uncovering the truth. The film explores lengthy flashbacks leading up to the crime, guided by Finn’s account, which casts doubt on the reliability of his narrative.
Although the premise shows potential, Adam Cooper’s film falters with its disjointed plot and uneven character development. The screenplay, co-written by Cooper and Bill Collage, often descends into confusion, seemingly justifying its chaos by leaning on the unreliable narrator trope. The portrayal of psychological revelations and repressed trauma feels somewhat oversimplified, with characters frequently coming across as either bewildered or frustrated.
Crowe’s performance is a highlight, providing depth and stability to an otherwise erratic film. His portrayal of Freeman brings genuine moments of authenticity to the narrative, making Sleeping Dogs engaging despite its shortcomings.
