Shafted (Netflix) Review :-
The show follows a group of four friends grappling with sudden upheavals in their lives triggered by challenges to their masculinity and patriarchal perspectives from the women around them. This leads to struggles in their relationships and careers, prompting questions about their ability to overcome these obstacles. The comedy deftly weaves these themes into a series filled with laughter, enjoyment, and engaging scenes.
While the series attempts to blend light-hearted comedy with deeper themes of masculinity and relationship dynamics, it falls short of delivering a cohesive narrative. It leans heavily into a conflict-driven plot where opposing sides try to justify themselves and prove each other wrong, leaving the audience wanting more depth and nuance.
Approaching this show with an open mind is crucial, as it juggles multiple layers that may not resonate with everyone. The inclusion of feminist themes aims to add “interest” and “relatability” for the audience, and while it partially succeeds, it doesn’t salvage the overall impression of the show.
While not entirely centered on male perspectives putting down genders (with a few exceptions), the narrative sometimes leans into this dynamic. It attempts to depict how a male figure, traditionally the head of the household, copes when his life takes unexpected turns. However, the portrayal of these characters often falters in their progression and development.
On the other hand, the show often leans heavily into a raunchy atmosphere, with jokes, discussions, and nude scenes dominating much of the narrative. However, the indirect inclusion of underage individuals in these themes raises significant concerns for me. The plot itself feels quite messy at times, providing entertainment in parts but ultimately leaving an unsettling overall impression.
On a positive note, the cast delivers exceptional performances that evoke both likeability and disdain for certain characters. They bring authenticity to their roles, making the characters feel vividly real. Additionally, the cinematography is commendable, ensuring clarity and coherence throughout the story—a welcome contrast to the plot’s complexities.
