Senna (Netflix) Review :-

As someone with little to no knowledge of Formula One, let alone Ayrton Senna, I approached Netflix’s Senna with a fresh perspective. I wasn’t concerned with historical accuracy or an in-depth analysis of racing mechanics; my sole expectation was to watch an engaging story about a legendary figure. While Senna certainly has its moments—offering breathtaking visuals and exhilarating race sequences—it ultimately felt bogged down by its length.

The first episode starts strong, immersing you in the intensity of Senna’s early struggles and his relentless determination. Watching him overcome obstacles—like prejudice in England and fierce rivals—draws you into the drama almost immediately. Gabriel Leone shines as Senna, bringing his charisma and unwavering drive to the screen, making it hard not to root for him, even when the narrative occasionally feels overly polished.

As the series progresses, the cracks in Senna start to become apparent. At 60 minutes per episode, the show often feels overstuffed, making shallow points rather than delving into meaningful depth. While the racing sequences are electrifying and full of tension, the personal storylines—such as Senna’s relationships with his family, rivals, and even the fictional journalist Laura (played by Kaya Scodelario)—remain one-dimensional.

Director Vicente Amorim deserves credit for his meticulous recreation of the Formula 1 world. The race scenes are visually stunning, capturing the speed, danger, and precision of the sport. However, as a series, Senna struggles to truly explore the man behind the wheel. The focus on Senna himself is understandable, given the subject, but it leaves little room for developing the supporting cast. Take his rivalry with French driver Alain Prost, for example—while compelling, it lacks the depth needed to fully engage the audience. Beyond their fierce competition on the track, Prost’s character feels underdeveloped, leaving viewers to guess whether he felt anger, resentment, or something else entirely.

Senna’s family members—his parents and siblings—are portrayed as supportive but lack significant narrative depth. Then there’s Laura, the journalist who provides a window into Senna’s psyche. Kaya Scodelario does a solid job in the role, but unfortunately, Laura feels more like a plot device for exposition than a fully fleshed-out character. It’s a missed opportunity to add a layer of complexity to the story.

Despite these shortcomings, Senna remains undeniably engaging. The highs of Senna’s victories and the lows of his struggles are compelling, largely due to Gabriel Leone’s portrayal, which brings a vulnerable charm to the character. The production value is top-notch, immersing viewers in the glamour and danger of Formula 1. The race scenes are a triumph—dynamic, thrilling, and impeccably choreographed. The roaring engines and tense pit stops capture the heart of the series, making these moments truly unforgettable.

Senna (Netflix) Trailor :-

The series doesn’t fail in its execution, but it falls short in exploring the deeper complexities of its subject. Senna is portrayed almost as a flawless hero, driven by the force of destiny, with only brief glimpses of darker or more human qualities. The story takes a sanitized approach, avoiding the messier truths that could have added much-needed depth and tension to the narrative.

Final Thought

Senna is a solid series that honors the legendary driver with stunning visuals and thrilling racing sequences. However, the overly polished storytelling and the lack of depth in the characters prevent it from leaving a lasting impact. While die-hard fans of Ayrton Senna may find much to appreciate, those looking for a more layered and emotionally rich experience might be disappointed.

Would I recommend it? If you’re already a fan of racing or interested in diving into the history of Formula One, it’s definitely worth a watch. But if you’re seeking a more nuanced or innovative portrayal of a sports icon’s life, Senna may not fully satisfy.
