The rise of the “eat the rich” genre has equipped global cinema with a powerful lens to explore societal issues. The extreme disparity between the wealthy and the impoverished seems insurmountable; just when you think things can’t get any worse, something new proves otherwise. The narrative of people struggling in ignorance while being treated like pests by an indifferent system creates stories that span a wide spectrum, often devoid of traditional heroes. Even the modern-day Robin Hood is hesitant to speak out, knowing that doing so might lead to being silenced by the powerful. Sector 36 occupies a grim corner of this spectrum, portraying a world where there are no heroes, only individuals striving to survive amidst overwhelming adversity.
Take a look at the headlines in tabloids and newspapers—each day we make it through unscathed might seem like a blessing, but tomorrow remains just as perilous. Aditya Nimbalkar and writer Bodhayan Roychaudhury delve into this unsettling reality in Sector 36. The killer even dehumanizes a child, treating them as a mere commodity. It’s only when the threat hits close to home that Pandey realizes he, too, is vulnerable and must finally wield his authority. However, he remains far from heroic and still faces insecurity.
Sector 36 provides a stark portrayal of immigrant lives and their hardships, refusing to sugarcoat the harsh realities they face. The film’s depiction of the psychopathic killer Prem, portrayed by Vikrant Massey, underscores this raw approach. Prem justifies his heinous acts by viewing the children as nuisances that the system disregards. For him, his crimes are a form of cleansing the world while feeding his violent tendencies. Massey’s performance as Prem is both compelling and unsettling, solidifying him as a believable antagonist. Pandey is depicted as a flawed and fearful individual, struggling under a system that favors the powerful and neglects the marginalized. Sector 36 excels in its attention to detail, evident in scenes like the one where the underprivileged watch a Kaun Banega Crorepati-like show, fantasizing about being in the spotlight. Yet, the harsh reality remains that few ever reach that coveted position.
Sector 36 stumbles a bit with its initial encounter between Pandey and Prem, which comes across as somewhat contrived. The coincidence of Prem attempting to abduct Pandey’s daughter at a crowded fair stretches believability, and the subsequent chase leading Pandey to discover missing children posters feels a bit forced. Additionally, Prem’s storyline ultimately feels incomplete and loosely tied up.
Nevertheless, the film’s exploration of ongoing crimes and the silencing of those who oppose them is a compelling aspect. The technical team deserves praise for creating a world that feels both authentic and immersive.
