Saving Bikini Bottom (Netflix) Review :-
A typical episode of SpongeBob SquarePants lasts 11 minutes. For fans who can’t get enough of the cheerful, yellow sponge with the googly eyes and infectious laugh, a feature-length film promises ten times the fun. Add a plot about a mad scientist aiming to clone all the sea creatures from his part of the ocean, and you’ve got a SpongeBob adventure that might just satisfy even the most devoted fan.
Dropping exclusively on Netflix, Saving Bikini Bottom: A Sandy Cheeks Movie shifts the spotlight slightly away from our iconic sponge hero. That’s right, the beloved character SpongeBob SquarePants (voiced by Tom Kenny), who has been the face of the show for the past quarter century and recently surpassed 300 episodes, takes a backseat. For those unfamiliar, Sandy Cheeks is SpongeBob’s science-loving squirrel friend, not a nod to the gritty state of her square-panted buddy.
Saving Bikini Bottom finally delves into Sandy’s backstory, revealing details about her past that even she wasn’t aware of. Sandy, known for her airtight diving suit and exaggerated Southern accent, often mentions her Texas origins, but the show rarely ventures beyond the ocean, let alone to Galveston. This Gulf Coast town is her hometown and the destination for a cross-country journey mostly on dry land (complete with sight gags of SpongeBob yearning for moisture) or high in the sky, thanks to Sandy lassoing a passing jet. What better way for her and SpongeBob to travel from the Pacific Ocean to the Lone Star State?
Voiced with charm by Carolyn Lawrence, the math-savvy Sandy quickly connects the dots when a giant excavator from B.O.O.T.S. Marine Biology Lab scoops up most of her neighborhood. “That’s the lab I work for!” she exclaims in shock. Using her portable computer, Sandy soon identifies the culprit: someone named Sue Nahmee (a play on “tsunami”) has kidnapped her friends—starfish Patrick, cephalopod Squidward, and crustacean Mr. Krabs, all voiced by the original cast—for a mysterious “Sea Pals” project.
Saving Bikini Bottom (Netflix) Trailor :-
Sporting elaborate blue-tinted hair, Sue is brought to life by Wanda Sykes, whose energetic yet uneven performance adds a touch of over-the-top flair that can be hard to watch. While Parker Posey delivered a memorable turn in Josie and the Pussycats and Carol Burnett’s campy performance in Annie remains iconic, the balance of exaggerated acting is tricky. Sykes faces the added challenge of interacting with computer-generated marine life, which leads to some awkward moments. This awkwardness might be as much a result of director Liza Johnson’s approach as Sykes’ performance, as the comedian struggles to align her physicality and eyelines to convincingly engage with her animated counterparts.
Johnson, who previously directed the wildly entertaining Elvis & Nixon, shows a stronger knack for comedy than for crafting children’s content. In Saving Bikini Bottom, she manages to deliver just the right amount of surreal humor for fans of the show. The film combines quirky CG animation with live-action footage in creative ways, following in the footsteps of Sponge Out of Water (2015) and Sponge on the Run (2021*. This latest installment brings Steven Hillenburg’s beloved characters into visually engaging 3D, offering a realistic look complete with textures and shadows, though it doesn’t require special glasses to enjoy.
This technique, often hit-or-miss with hand-drawn characters (as seen in Pokémon: Detective Pikachu), fares better with the recent SpongeBob films. These movies effectively balance live-action and animation, enhancing the absurdity or surrealism of various scenes, much like the Zen tumbleweed with Keanu Reeves’ face in Sponge on the Run or David Hasselhoff’s speedboat cameo in the 2004 film. In Saving Bikini Bottom, a humorous moment unfolds when SpongeBob visits a waterpark, diving below the surface and tickling everyone’s feet.
The rambunctious adventure includes encounters with rattlesnakes, a few musical numbers, and a Cheeks family reunion, with Johnny Knoxville as Sandy’s twin brother Randy, Craig Robinson as her proud father, and versatile voice actor Grey DeLisle portraying four other characters. While it may not be as clever as adults might hope, it’s harmless enough for children. Once Sandy and SpongeBob reach the lab, Sue Nahmee’s cloning scheme kicks into gear, and just like that, this otherwise tame adventure ends up swamped with SpongeBobs.
“Saving Bikini Bottom” is now streaming on Netflix.
