Run Away, adapted by Danny Brocklehurst from Harlan Coben’s 2019 novel, is a slow-burning, emotional domestic thriller that focuses more on psychological tension than on plot twists. Over eight episodes, it explores the desperation of parents, raising tough questions about responsibility, denial, and the fragile stories families tell themselves to cope.
At the center of the series is James Nesbitt, who gives a subtle and gripping performance as Simon Greene. Simon appears to have a stable life with a good career, a supportive wife, and three children—until his eldest daughter, Paige, goes missing. Nesbitt avoids overacting, showing a father quietly falling apart inside. His performance adds emotional depth to the series, making even the less believable moments feel realistic and relatable.
The story kicks off when Simon finds Paige, only to discover she is homeless, addicted, and emotionally damaged. This sets up what could have been a close look at parental failure and control, though the series doesn’t fully explore this. Its best moments are quiet and understated, showing strained family ties, lingering guilt, and subtle regret. Ellie de Lange gives Paige depth and vulnerability, making her more than just a plot device.
However, the series slows down in the middle. The early tension fades into stretched-out episodes that rely on secrets and convenient coincidences. Fans of Coben adaptations will find many twists predictable—hidden identities, buried secrets, and morally flawed characters appear exactly when expected. While these plot points are executed well, they don’t deliver the surprises the series hints at.

The supporting cast keeps the series engaging. Minnie Driver shines as Ingrid Greene, showing a mother torn between compassion and frustration. Ruth Jones adds layers to her character, suggesting hidden motives beneath her calm exterior. Alfred Enoch is steady and reliable, though his character isn’t explored as much as his role deserves.
Final Thought
Overall, Run Away is a decent but uneven thriller. It succeeds more as an emotional family drama than as a fast-paced mystery. The story rarely surprises and doesn’t break new ground, but the strong acting and steady emotional tension make it worth watching, especially if you’re patient and not expecting anything groundbreaking.
