Adapted from Colleen Hoover’s novel, Regretting You follows Morgan Grant (Allison Williams) as she struggles to rebuild her life after a tragic accident takes the lives of her husband, Chris (Scott Eastwood), and her sister, Jenny (Willa Fitzgerald). While grappling with grief and the shock of their affair, Morgan must also navigate her relationship with her daughter, Clara (McKenna Grace), as they confront the family’s hidden truths and find their way back to each other.

Regretting You Review :-
As Josh Boone’s film begins, we see that high school sweethearts Morgan and Chris, and Jenny and Jonah (Dave Franco), have ended up with partners who are their polar opposites. Subtle sparks exist between Morgan and Jonah, but life takes a turn when Morgan becomes pregnant with Chris’s child. Seventeen years later, Morgan and Chris have a confident, spirited daughter, Clara, while Jenny and Jonah have a son and are preparing to marry. Tragedy strikes when an accident claims Chris and Jenny’s lives, exposing their affair and shattering Morgan and Jonah, who had long suppressed their feelings in an effort to do right by their partners.
While this drives one half of the story, the other focuses on Clara’s teenage romance with Miller (Mason Thames), the school’s most popular boy, who comes from a troubled background. The narrative intertwines these two storylines, exploring the complex bond between Clara and Morgan. Like many mother-daughter relationships, theirs is layered and often strained—Clara idolizes her late father and aunt Jenny, and the tragedy only deepens the emotional distance between her and her mother. Adding to the tension are Morgan’s growing closeness with Jonah and Clara’s budding relationship with Miller, which soon sparks conflict.
Susan McMartin’s screenplay feels one-dimensional, never fully delving into the emotional weight of the tragedy and betrayal. Clara’s guilt over texting Jenny before the crash—believing it caused the accident—is only touched on briefly, without meaningful exploration. Likewise, Morgan’s years of sacrifice, first raising her younger sister and later her daughter while putting her own dreams on hold, are handled superficially. The second act drags, and the storytelling remains largely uninspired. While there are occasional moments that tug at the heartstrings, the tone is uneven—grief, anger, and conflict dominate one scene, only to shift abruptly to romance in the next.
Regretting You Trailor :-
The film’s highlights come from Clara’s spirited best friend, Lexie (Sam Morelos), whose reactions to the awkward dynamics between Morgan, Clara, Jonah, and Miller provide much-needed levity. Clara’s teenage confusion, which drives her to use Miller to rebel against her mother, adds a sharper edge, while Miller’s relationship with his grandfather (Clancy Brown) brings warmth to the story. However, the third act feels rushed, and the resolution comes across as half-baked.
Final Thought
The performances are a definite highlight. Allison Williams excels as a woman grappling with betrayal while still prioritizing her daughter, and Dave Franco gives a strong, understated performance as the kind-hearted Jonah. McKenna Grace and Mason Thames share fantastic chemistry, delivering standout moments in every scene. Regretting You has a clear emotional core, but romance takes center stage, leaving other themes underexplored. Despite its weighty subject matter, the film ultimately feels underwhelming.
