Hailing from the small town of Kutch Bhuj, Rashmi (portrayed by Taapsee Pannu) is a spirited individual from the outset. Known for her fiery nature, she fearlessly challenges societal norms, often clashing with boys and defying gender stereotypes. Despite facing discrimination due to her dark skin and tomboyish demeanor, Rashmi possesses a remarkable talent for sprinting, likened to that of a cheetah. Encouraged by her equally strong-willed mother Bhanu Ben (played by Supriya Pathak), Rashmi earns the opportunity to represent India in the Asian Games. However, her aspirations are dashed when a gender test abruptly halts her career, plunging her into a crisis of identity and self-worth.
Unlike typical sports dramas, “Rashmi Rocket” transcends the conventional narrative of a climactic game. Nanda Periyasamy’s compelling storyline, Aniruddha Guha’s incisive screenplay, and Akarsh Khurana’s adept direction captivate audiences from start to finish, culminating in a courtroom showdown for justice. The film serves as a poignant commentary on an important and timely issue, sparking a dialogue on gender discrimination and inequality. Yet, its execution avoids becoming didactic or overly patriotic. At times, however, the narrative feels somewhat contrived, prompting reflection on the realities faced by women athletes who endure far greater challenges due to genetic testing.
Taapsee Pannu delivers a standout performance, embodying Rashmi’s physical and emotional journey with authenticity and conviction. Her portrayal effectively captures Rashmi’s triumphs and struggles, compelling viewers to empathize with her character’s plight. While Pannu’s dedication to the role is commendable, some aspects of her makeup could have been more convincing.
The film features a strong supporting cast, with Priyanshu Painyuli shining as Rashmi’s supportive husband and Abhishek Banerjee delivering a noteworthy performance as her determined advocate. Supriya Pilgaonkar portrays the role of the judge convincingly, while Mantra impresses as Rashmi’s strict coach.
Amit Trivedi’s music, accompanied by Kausar Munir’s lyrics, seamlessly transitions from uplifting to emotional moments, enhancing the film’s narrative. However, the background score during courtroom scenes feels slightly out of place. Despite not boasting grand-scale production, the film effectively captures the essence of its screenplay, particularly in the electrifying racetrack scenes that immerse viewers in the excitement of the sport.
With its powerful performances and thought-provoking storyline, “Rashmi Rocket” successfully informs, entertains, and educates audiences about the antiquated practices that perpetuate inequality and bias in sports.
