Directors and writers Rahul daCunha and Bugs Bhargava Krishna adapt their gripping one-room play into a cinematic thriller that explores guilt, friendship, and justice. The film centers on childhood friends Pramod Khandelwal (Amit Sadh), Vishnu Saigal (Jim Sarbh), and Nicky (Anuvab Pal), who are haunted by a dark secret—their silence after witnessing the brutal assault of their friend Babu Bhonsle (Himanshu Balpandey) and their failure to confront the attacker.
Their long-standing bond begins to fracture under the weight of this shared guilt. But when Mona (Ketaki Narayan), the daughter of powerful politician Mansekar (Shishir Sharma), is murdered—just after being placed under Pramod’s guardianship—the trio is thrown into a new crisis. As the investigation unfolds, suspicion falls on Nicky and Natasha Khandelwal (Manjari Fadnnis), Vishnu’s former lover. With Vishnu now serving as their lawyer, he and Pramod join forces with Inspector Prabhakar Pethe (Sudeep Modak) to unravel the mystery and confront the truth, even as old wounds resurface and loyalties are tested.
This classic murder mystery has enough intrigue to hold the viewer’s attention, opening with the unsettling image of a decaying corpse. The film hints at deeper emotional undercurrents, particularly through the traumatic backstory of the attack on Babu and how each friend copes with their past inaction. However, this compelling thread is left largely underdeveloped.
While the pacing remains steady, the storytelling feels uneven—frequently shifting between timelines without fully committing to the emotional or psychological weight of either. Key elements that deserve a closer look are brushed over, leaving gaps in character motivations and narrative cohesion.
Take Nicky, for instance—his troubled relationship with his mother and murky past are briefly touched upon, but never fully explored, weakening his credibility as the prime murder suspect. Similarly, the film falls short in fleshing out its central characters. Pramod is caught between his loyalty to Mansekar and his guilt over Babu, while Vishnu wrestles with a moral dilemma—criticizing Mansekar’s corruption even as he defends Mona’s abusive fiancé. These tensions are ripe for drama, yet they remain disappointingly surface-level, undermining the story’s emotional depth and thematic potential.
The film makes an effort to incorporate humour, but the comedic moments often fall flat. Where it succeeds, however, is in building suspense—the mystery unravels with just enough twists to keep the outcome unpredictable until the very end. Still, the climax falters; it drags on longer than necessary and leans heavily on exposition, ultimately undercutting the tension and emotional impact the story had worked to build.

Jim Sarbh offers a nuanced and heartfelt performance, skillfully capturing the complexities of a man torn between loyalty as a friend and lingering emotions as an ex-lover. Amit Sadh commands attention in every scene, delivering a compelling presence, though the full depth of his character remains frustratingly untapped. Anuvab Pal takes on the role of comic relief, but the uneven writing of his character diminishes the effectiveness of his contribution. Manjari Fadnnis is steady and believable throughout, bringing quiet strength to her role.
Final Thought
Pune Highway holds strong promise with its intriguing premise and the potential for rich character development, but it ultimately falls short of delivering a truly gripping experience. What starts with the makings of a taut thriller gradually loses momentum, resulting in a ride that’s more uneven than thrilling.
