PT Sir Review :-
The male protagonist of PT Sir fights for women’s rights after witnessing the dire circumstances faced by those around him. This mainstream Tamil film follows a familiar formula where a woman’s suffering serves as a catalyst for the hero’s transformation. However, PT Sir manages to avoid being overly fixated on its protagonist, Kanagavel (played by Hiphop Tamizha Aadhi), and instead devotes attention to exploring the experiences of Anikha Surendran’s character, Nandini.
Audience reception of PT Sir hinges on expectations. Those seeking a film free from mainstream tropes and hero-centric moments may find it lacking. Yet, the film displays sensitivity in its portrayal of Nandini’s harassment, particularly in its depiction of the shifts in her family and societal attitudes towards her.
In many films and in our society, we often witness parents being excused too easily after their daughter is compelled to take extreme measures due to sexual harassment, despite them contributing to her shame and blame. PT Sir, however, takes a bold stance in highlighting the damaging roles that loved ones can inadvertently play in a woman’s sense of helplessness and self-esteem. Nevertheless, as a comedy-drama, the film balances its exploration of these issues with moments of humor, which limits the depth to which it can delve into the seriousness of the subject matter.
PT Sir is best approached as a commercial entertainer aiming to reach a broad audience and raise awareness, rather than offering a nuanced examination of the complexities of sexual harassment experienced by women.
What sets PT Sir apart from other commercial films with similar storylines is its protagonist’s profession: Kanagavel is a physical education teacher at a school. His romantic involvement with Kashmira Pardeshi, also a teacher at the same school, fails to resonate, as does the unnecessary subplot involving a young student competing for her affection.
The music by Hiphop Tamizha effectively maintains the blend of whimsy in these sequences and later underscores the drama and tension. Additionally, the juxtaposition between two households—one grieving while the other celebrates—evokes a poignant emotional response without needing explicit direction from the filmmakers.
The theme of predestination aligns seamlessly with the heightened atmosphere of the film. Additionally, Thiagarajan’s portrayal of the antagonist adds to the movie’s strengths, as his commanding presence and aura effectively establish him as a formidable adversary.
However, the casting choice of an actress in her 40s portraying the mother of a male lead in his 30s may initially seem jarring. Yet, Devadarshini’s performance skillfully overcomes this hurdle, allowing audiences to engage deeply in the nuanced mother-son relationship between her and Adhi.
