The year 2022 marked a significant shift in Bengali cinema, witnessing a departure from traditional family narratives towards more nuanced storytelling. Themes such as alternative family structures, urban co-living arrangements, and non-traditional career paths gained prominence, with a notable emphasis on female-led stories. This shift reflected Tollywood’s commitment to telling diverse and inclusive stories, a stark contrast to the challenges faced by Bollywood, particularly in light of the rise of OTT platforms.

“Projapoti” aligns with this trend, opting for an intimate narrative that delves into the complexities of familial relationships. While the premise may not break new ground, the film’s strength lies in its portrayal of relatable characters and heartfelt performances. Mithun shines as Gaur, capturing the essence of an aging widower yearning for companionship in his twilight years. His effortless portrayal draws the audience into Gaur’s world, evoking empathy and understanding.

Dev, alongside Mithun, delivers a convincing performance as Joy, effectively portraying the struggles of a son torn between his career aspirations and familial obligations. However, the character development falls short, particularly for secondary characters, leaving some arcs feeling underdeveloped. Despite these shortcomings, the chemistry between Mithun and Dev resonates with contemporary audiences, adding depth to their on-screen relationship.

The supporting cast, including Kharaj Mukherjee and Mamata Shankar, contribute significantly to the film’s appeal, infusing it with humor and warmth. However, certain character dynamics, such as that between Dev and Sweta Bhattacharya, lack the necessary chemistry to fully engage the audience. The film’s runtime could have been tighter, and the screenplay more polished, yet the emotional payoff in the final act provides a satisfying conclusion to the narrative.

Rathijit’s music serves as a poignant backdrop, enhancing the storytelling and eliciting a range of emotions from the audience. Overall, “Projapoti” offers a compelling blend of engaging narrative, heartfelt performances, and family-friendly appeal. While it may not revolutionize the genre, the film succeeds in providing a relatable and emotionally resonant cinematic experience, making it a worthwhile watch for audiences, particularly for fans of Mithun.
