Picture This (AmazonPrimeVideo) Review :-

Movies that focus on Indian celebrations and customs often feel shallow and superficial, to the point where many desis find them tacky. The music, the pandit ji, the overbearing mother obsessed with getting her 30-year-old daughter married—it’s all so repetitive and uninspired at this point. It’s presented as humor, but honestly, I found it somewhat insulting. Sure, it was funny a few years ago, but now this trope feels overdone and, in a way, mocks our culture to the point where it’s hard to watch.

The story centers on Pia, who is clearly career-driven to the point where she can’t imagine getting married. Her Indian family, on the other hand, can’t handle the fact that she’s 30 and her younger sister is tying the knot, so they set her up on dates in hopes of her finding “the one” and, of course, settling down to have kids. I get it—there’s this stereotype about Indians loving big, extravagant weddings and being obsessed with grandchildren. But repeating the same tired jokes in the most exaggerated way possible isn’t as funny as it’s made out to be.

What really bothers me is how shallow the characters are, combined with the predictable storyline. Pia is set up on dates with people she has no interest in, and they’re either obnoxious or fit the typical “nerdy Indian” stereotype that Western media often portrays us as—there’s no depth or nuance. Pia’s gay best friend is exactly what you’d expect: overly sexual and overly friendly, though at least he’s given a bit more substance than the others. The dates are clearly meant to be comic relief, but instead, they come off as caricatures, failing to evoke the emotions you’d hope for.

Hero Fiennes Tiffin, whom I’ve seen in After, surprisingly brings a sweet and watchable boyish charm to his role. Alongside Simone Ashley, who made a memorable impact in Bridgerton, they look dreamy together as they navigate their past and work through their feelings in the present. Unfortunately, the romance between them doesn’t get much screen time, and we only catch brief glimpses of their evolving connection. Pia embarks on her own journey, coming to some realizations about her life, which is admirable, but ultimately, it doesn’t bring anything new. It feels like every other movie about NRIs, following the same familiar formula.

Final Thought

In the end, Picture This offers nothing new and relies on caricatures of Indians for cheap laughs. It’s a formula we’ve seen too many times in other films, and it’s starting to feel stale. The humor is unimaginative and cringeworthy, though some of the side plots do have potential. I would have liked to see more of the chemistry between Fiennes Tiffin and Simone, as they make a striking couple, but unfortunately, we don’t get enough of it. Overall, this one’s a miss for me.
