Set in the Brazilian state of Goiás, the series vividly portrays the integral role of music in Brazilian culture, serving as a common medium for expressing love, anguish, and other emotions. Through the journey of the music band Só Se For Por Amor (Only For Love), the narrative explores themes of aspiring for success, love, heartbreak, and the intertwined emotions.
Deusa and Tadeu, along with other band members, embark on a musical journey to connect with their audience. Their aspirations of achieving fame in the industry seem within reach when they audition for César Marcolo’s music label. However, Marcolo’s decision to sign Deusa as a solo artist forces her to confront a choice between her career and love, setting the story in motion and intertwining the fates of other characters.
As Deusa’s star image is crafted for the public, César instructs his team to incorporate clichés into her background story, aligning with the prevailing narrative tropes. Unfortunately, this reliance on clichés renders the storyline predictable, with the plot unfolding in a straightforward manner.
While the series weaves multiple subplots and introduces various characters to enrich the narrative, including LGBTQIA+ characters, its progressive twist falls short of expectations. However, the series shines in its portrayal of Brazilian musical heritage, featuring recognizable golden songs that resonate with Latin American viewers.
Despite its musical highlights, the series’ predictable trajectory detracts from its overall impact. The escalating drama towards the series’ conclusion feels contrived, with viewers often anticipating each plot twist before it occurs, diminishing the element of surprise.
Though each character brings their own perspective on love, the series falls short in fully exploring these diverse definitions. Additionally, the portrayal of LGBTQ characters, particularly the lone lesbian character, reinforces stereotypes and fails to provide meaningful representation, detracting from the series’ progressive themes.
After the subplot involving the protagonist reaches its resolution and aligns with her character arc, her storyline abruptly disappears from the screen, and she is never seen again. Deusa’s portrayal also veers into villainization, as everything that occurs to her serves merely as a plot device to advance the storyline, painting her as a woman deemed “too ambitious.”
In essence, LGBTQ+ characters are either sidelined themselves or those associated with them are reduced to mere props. Neither are they developed as individuals with unique personalities. Conversely, certain heteronormative relationships depict the female characters as competing adversaries, perpetuating a simplistic male-centric fantasy.
Only For Love: Is it Worth Watching?
The music captivates, drawing viewers into the narrative and eliciting empathy for the characters in poignant moments. However, the storyline itself is a series of clichés, lacking depth or originality. Therefore, Only For Love isn’t exactly a must-watch. It fails to deliver any meaningful insight into love, yet it also lacks the compelling elements of genuine emotional turmoil.
Viewing it as a way to pass the time may be its only merit, aside from a few commendable performances scattered throughout. It’s more of a show to consider rather than an essential watch. If tired and predictable plotlines don’t bother you, you might still find some enjoyment in the series.
