One Fast Move (AmazonPrimeVideo) Review :-
Redemption and sports often go hand in hand, with many inspiring underdog stories set in the world of athletics. The universal appeal of a determined athlete making it big with sheer talent resonates with audiences, as seen in classics like Rocky, Invincible, and I, Tonya. Prime Video’s new direct-to-streaming film One Fast Move continues this tradition, offering a fresh entry into the genre in 2024.
No, this isn’t The Bikeriders with Tom Hardy and Austin Butler. Remarkably, two separate motorcycle dramas have been released this year — quite the coincidence, akin to the release of two horror nun movies, Immaculate and The First Omen, within the same week. While these films tell vastly different stories, One Fast Move carves out its own unique space with its smaller, family-centric approach and a talented ensemble cast. Eschewing green screens and CGI, the film delivers impressive, immersive visuals that capture the thrill of extreme sports authentically. Though the narrative follows familiar tropes, the film’s polished execution and captivating cast make it stand out.
You might be surprised to see KJ Apa, known for his role as “Archie” on Riverdale, transformed into an extreme sports star in One Fast Move. The New Zealand actor looks worlds apart from his iconic TV character, embodying a gritty new persona that fits right in with the tough world of motorcycle racing (though not the same as The Bikeriders).
One Fast Move (AmazonPrimeVideo) Trailor :-
KJ Apa, delivering a flawless American accent, showcases a chiseled physique, a shaved head, and intense eyes that reflect a man shaped by hardship. The gripping opening sequence sets the stage for the challenges ahead, proving that the Riverdale fans may need to rethink their opinions. Apa brings a serious, professional edge to his role, echoing the strong performance he gave in The Hate U Give (2018).
Directed by Kelly Blatz, who has also made a name for himself as an actor, One Fast Move combines sleekness with raw intensity in its visual style. The film maintains a consistently polished look while frequently embracing a gritty edge. This blend is especially evident in the gripping opening sequence, where Wes (Apa) finds himself entangled in an illegal street race that ultimately lands him behind bars.
Months later, Wes finds himself in a small town that feels both unfamiliar and oddly reminiscent of his past. As a passionate motorbike racer, he inevitably gravitates toward the local track, where he becomes intrigued by one racer in particular: the seasoned Dean (Eric Dane), who also happens to be his estranged father. Both Wes and Dean share a natural talent for high-speed racing, though Dean’s body is now held together with metal rods from years of racing injuries. Complicating matters, Wes is now broke after his time in prison, while Dean is more focused on partying and chasing women than on winning races.
Wes initially clashes with Dean’s reckless, party-loving attitude, leading to some heated confrontations. However, what unfolds is a touching and grounded family dynamic that will resonate with audiences, even for those who aren’t fans of motorcycles. The chemistry between Apa and Dane is often dryly humorous and edged with expletives, as their characters exchange tough love. As the story progresses, Dean reluctantly agrees to mentor his estranged son, setting the stage for Wes’s potential rise to modest motorcycle stardom.
Dean secures Wes a job at a local bike shop run by Abel, a weathered and seasoned biker portrayed with authenticity by Edward James Olmos. The generational dynamic from Olmos to Dane and then to Apa adds depth to the film, even as it leans heavily on scenes that don’t showcase the extreme sports expertise of its characters. Maia Reficco also shines as the charming local waitress who is drawn to Wes’s humble, newcomer persona. The chemistry between the young stars adds to the film’s appeal, even though the romantic storyline follows predictable paths.
The ending of One Fast Move does resort to familiar redemption clichés to wrap up Wes’ story, but the journey to that point is engaging and worthwhile. As Eric Dane aptly put it in our recent interview, “We want to watch broken people heal themselves.” While the ultimate fate of the protagonist is predictable, the charming side characters and their arcs add depth to the film, making it easier to overlook the neatly tied-up resolution as the third act concludes.
Themes of daring to dream, young parenting, and pursuing goals beyond one’s prime will resonate with anyone grappling with today’s challenging economy. KJ Apa demonstrates that he’s poised to continue making waves in Hollywood.
