Nokturno (AmazonPrimeVideo) Review :-

Nokturno draws comparisons to The Ring in several ways. We follow Jamie, a headstrong non-believer and the eldest of three siblings, who is left devastated by the sudden death of her younger sister. While their mother attributes the tragedy to the kumakatok, Jamie believes it’s merely suicide, as the police have suggested. However, as is often the case, it turns out to be far more complicated.

Mikhail Red’s film is notably slow-paced, filled with jump scares and clichéd horror tropes. While the incorporation of folklore is commendable, it ultimately fails to deliver real thrills or genuine horror. Much of the runtime is spent exploring the strained family dynamics rather than effectively scaring the audience. Even this aspect feels underdeveloped, lacking depth or nuance. Moreover, similar themes have been explored in other films, rendering the emotional beats of this story predictable and uninspiring.

It doesn’t help that Jamie is such an underdeveloped character, making her a chore to follow. She makes one illogical and distressing decision after another, turning the film’s focus on her into a frustrating experience. You wish she would at least acknowledge the dangers around her—like not opening doors at midnight—but she seems unconcerned about potential threats, whether they’re from criminals or ghosts. This quickly diminishes any sympathy you might have for her as she carelessly wanders down dark hallways and out of the house without a second thought.

While there’s a decent amount of blood that might surprise viewers, the film doesn’t offer any fresh takes on the horror genre’s familiar tropes. Some scenes involving the kumakatok are indeed creepy, but the overall atmosphere leaves much to be desired. The constant nighttime rain, which might have been atmospheric at first, has become clichéd and tiresome due to its overuse. The film could have delved deeper into the family dynamics to create a more impactful narrative, but instead, it relies on unnecessary jump scares that only serve to annoy.

Ultimately, Nokturno on Prime Video falls short of expectations, feeling more like a mediocre horror flick than anything substantial. While the performances are solid, Nadine Lustre does her best with a character who lacks both charm and depth. Jamie’s character is poorly written, showing little to no growth by the end of the film. The supporting cast is strong, but, unfortunately, their characters are similarly underdeveloped, leaving them with little to engage the audience.

Final Thought

Nokturno is frustratingly dull and unremarkable. The characters lack any development or depth, and the storyline feels flat and uninspired. There are few genuine scares, and the horror elements are stale and repetitive. While the concept of the kumakatok has the potential to be truly unsettling, the film fails to deliver either a genuinely terrifying experience or an engaging family drama. Without any surprising twists, it’s easy to predict the plot from the very beginning, which makes for a disappointing viewing experience in the horror/thriller genre.
