No Gain No Love Episode 1 Review
The series opens by depicting Son Hae-yeong as a child. During a school game, she expresses a preference for playing soccer over dodgeball, but her teacher insists that dodgeball is the sport for girls. Hae-yeong argues passionately that they can’t know if they like soccer unless they try it, and when asked for her name, she boldly replies, “Son Hae-yeong,” meaning “no loss.” This moment establishes her determined character, shaped by her childhood experiences. Growing up, her mother’s generosity in bringing other kids home made Hae-yeong feel that her mother’s love was divided.
In the present, Hae-yeong attends a wedding, deliberating on how much to contribute as a congratulatory gift. It turns out to be her ex’s wedding, a man she parted ways with six months ago. To her dismay, she discovers he had been dating the bride for a year before their marriage, which fuels her frustration. Though she imagines making a scene by crashing the wedding, she ends up simply catching the bride’s bouquet.
Meanwhile, we are introduced to Kim Ji-uk, an orphan who, despite a poor job interview performance, comes across as kind, intelligent, and sincere. After the interview, he returns a borrowed coat to a policeman and helps apprehend a criminal, showcasing his good nature.
Nam Ja-yeon, an adult fiction author and Hae-yeong’s friend, offers comfort after the wedding. Hae-yeong reveals that she ended her relationship with her ex to avoid pressuring him, as she was the sole caretaker for her mother. However, discovering his infidelity makes her want her money back.
Later, Hae-yeong and her friend visit the convenience store where Ji-uk works. Their interactions are strained, with Ji-uk being aloof while Hae-yeong enjoys provoking him. The following day, Hae-yeong confronts her ex at work, demanding the return of the wedding money. He refuses, stating he will only return it once she gets married. Enraged, Hae-yeong learns from a colleague about the financial perks for married employees, intensifying her frustration with the disadvantages faced by single women.
We are also introduced to Bok Gyu-hyun, the son of a wealthy CEO, who is given an ultimatum by his father: either lead the company to become number one within a year or get married. Determined to avoid marriage, Gyu-hyun devises a new role within the company that reports directly to the president, aiming to boost the company’s growth.
Hae-yeong is interested in applying for this position but learns that the company does not hire single women for such roles due to the president’s history of affairs, which his family wants to avoid repeating. This discrimination adds to Hae-yeong’s frustration.
In a fit of frustration, Hae-yeong returns to the convenience store where Ji-uk works, carrying drinks. As she watches him, an idea suddenly strikes her. Approaching him with determination, she boldly asks Ji-uk to be her groom.

The episode opens with a flashback to a snowy day from the past, where Kim Ji-uk sits outside a nursing home with his grandmother. They discuss life, and she advises him to marry a respectable woman who doesn’t smoke and to avoid having a child out of wedlock. The scene then shifts to the present, picking up from where the previous episode left off.
In the present, a drunken Son Hae-yeong proposes marriage to Ji-uk. Realizing her inebriated state, Ji-uk recalls that Hae-yeong embodies the very qualities his grandmother had warned him about. It is revealed that Ji-uk has known Hae-yeong for six years, having observed her bossy behavior with her ex-boyfriends during their work together, which has led him to hold a negative opinion of her.
At work, Hae-yeong receives a message from Kwon I-rin, who is not only the wife of her ex-boyfriend but also the best friend of the president’s daughter. When Hae-yeong meets I-rin in her office, she learns that Ahn Ue-jae, her ex, has also been summoned. Initially, Hae-yeong worries that I-rin might know about their past affair. However, I-rin reveals that both Hae-yeong and Ue-jae have submitted identical proposals for a new project. A flashback shows that while they were dating, Hae-yeong had shared her idea with Ue-jae. I-rin suggests they collaborate, as both proposals cannot be accepted as they are.
Later, Ue-jae privately urges Hae-yeong to withdraw, arguing that the company would never select a single woman for the role. Hae-yeong accuses him of stealing her idea and refuses to back down, threatening to expose him. In response, Ue-jae blackmails her, threatening to reveal their past relationship and accuse her of trying to sabotage him out of spite. He believes that I-rin will support him. Enraged, Hae-yeong retorts that she is getting married in a month, suggesting that she won’t back out and that her impending marriage will strengthen her chances of securing the job.
Determined, Hae-yeong returns to the convenience store and once again asks Ji-uk to be her fake groom. She clarifies that it would be a sham marriage, but Ji-uk declines. Undeterred, Hae-yeong goes home and begins planning the wedding on her own. When her friends and roommate learn of her plan, they caution her that a fake marriage is essentially a scam, but Hae-yeong remains resolute.
As Hae-yeong searches for a groom, Ji-uk encounters a man he dislikes at his place. Upon discovering that this man is being considered for the role of Hae-yeong’s fake husband, Ji-uk smashes the man’s phone to prevent him from meeting her. Ji-uk then waits for Hae-yeong in the rain outside the store. When she arrives, he agrees to participate in the fake wedding on the condition that there will be no emotional involvement. In exchange, Hae-yeong must look after his cat for a week.
The two head out to shop for wedding outfits, their playful banter continuing as they pick out clothes. Despite their lighthearted interactions, Hae-yeong is mindful of Ji-uk’s feelings, concerned about the age difference and not wanting to cause him any distress. While Ji-uk is in the fitting room trying on a suit, Ahn Ue-jae and Kwon I-rin unexpectedly arrive at the store and insist on meeting the groom. When Ji-uk emerges in the suit, he looks remarkably handsome and charming, leaving the episode on a high note.
tvN has set a high bar with its recent dramas, and while No Gain No Love hasn’t quite reached the same level of impact, it has been enjoyable thus far. Episode 2 maintains the sharp humor, with Shin Min-ah and Kim Young-dae’s interactions providing plenty of entertainment, whether they’re sparring with each other or others. This episode delves deeper into the complex dynamics between the main characters, adding depth to their personalities and relationships. The blend of humor and tension makes for an engaging watch.
However, the side characters have yet to make a significant impact and require further development to maintain audience interest. The trio of friends, in particular, stands out for their strong bond, forged through shared experiences at Hae-yeong’s mother’s shelter home. Their friendship adds an intriguing dimension to the story.
Regarding the chemistry between the leads, it’s still in its early stages. While their connection hasn’t fully developed, there is potential for it to deepen as the series progresses. Their playful banter during the wedding preparations offered some of the episode’s lighter moments. Additionally, a subtle shift in their relationship occurs as Hae-yeong begins to show concern for Ji-uk, introducing a tender element that suggests their relationship could evolve beyond mere convenience.
