My Old Ass is a whimsical fantasy comedy-drama with the charm of a coming-of-age story. It’s a lighthearted, feel-good film that’s sure to bring a smile to viewers’ faces. While the time-travel element may seem a bit complex at first, at its heart, it’s a delightful journey of self-discovery, as Elliott, a young woman uncertain about her sexual identity, navigates the question of whether she’s straight or bisexual. When Elliott has a surreal encounter with her future self, the experience sparks a transformative journey that shifts her views on her family, friends, and boyfriend. My Old Ass is a heartfelt film that, despite a predictable ending, keeps viewers engaged, rooting for Elliott’s growth and curious to see how her story unfolds.

She’s about to leave her family’s cranberry farm in Canada and head off to college in Toronto. As her friends prepare mushroom tea, they all take a trip—but Elliott’s experience is unlike any other when she meets her 39-year-old self (Aubrey Plaza). To prove her identity, the older Elliott points out familiar physical traits, and trust begins to build between them. Seeking guidance about her future, Elliott turns to her older self, who advises her to strengthen her family bonds and warns her to stay away from a guy named Chad (Percy Hynes White).
Despite the warning from her older self, she finds herself drawn to him and can’t resist the chemistry between them. When she later meets with her future self again, Elliott admits that Chad’s charm was too strong to ignore. That’s when the older Elliott reveals a shocking truth.
My Old Ass is a charming, easy-to-watch comedy-drama that blends humor with heartfelt moments. While its premise is creative, the storyline remains relatively simple, allowing the film to focus on Elliott’s personal journey of self-discovery—particularly as she navigates her evolving understanding of her sexuality. The film also explores the significance of family and friends, underscoring why these relationships matter in shaping who we are.
