Mrs (Zee5) Review :-

Few things are as unsettling and distressing as witnessing the unpaid, unnoticed, and undervalued labor of homemakers in Indian society. Zee5’s Mrs., the Hindi adaptation of The Great Indian Kitchen, will prompt viewers to reflect on their own lives and the immense effort that goes into running a home, largely carried out by the women around them. The film closely mirrors the Malayalam original, with a few adjustments made to resonate with the Hindi-speaking audience.

Sanya Malhotra does an excellent job bringing her character to life, fully embodying the story. We watch her question the immaturity and sexist attitudes in her new home, but, as with many abusive systems, it takes her some time to come to terms with it. I wouldn’t call it rebellion, though; asking not to be treated like a servant in the kitchen or made to do needless tasks for no reason feels more like common sense. Refusing to accept that is not defiance—it’s simply letting common sense prevail.

As I mentioned earlier, this film will be quite triggering for many, as its subtlety seeps under your skin. You expect the husband, a gynecologist, to be more empathetic to his new wife’s struggles, but when even he insists his clothes be laid out for him before work, it becomes clear that things aren’t improving. The film does an outstanding job of highlighting these triggers in a way that hits hard. Though these issues are so ingrained in everyday life, they feel absurd when viewed from the outside.

One of the standout elements of both the original and the Hindi remake is the beautiful dishes Richa and her mother-in-law prepare for their family. It’s striking how the men in the household are so dismissive of the effort that goes into making a steady stream of hot rotis and chutney ground on the traditional mortar and pestle, all while expecting their shoes to be laid out for them. This casual disregard is what really gets under your skin, leaving you seething with frustration. There’s a unique kind of rage that films like this provoke, and Mrs. does an excellent job of highlighting this unfair dismissiveness, while also showing just how impossible it is to break free from such a situation.

Mrs (Zee5) Trailor :-

Final Thought

Mrs. is a heartbreaking and deeply moving film that captures the true essence of working in an Indian kitchen. It shines a light on the invisible labor that goes into maintaining a home—work that many people ignore or take for granted—and forces us to confront it in uncomfortable detail. Richa’s escape from her sexist in-laws feels almost liberating, but it raises an important question: Are we truly doing right by the mothers and wives who sacrifice everything to make our lives easier? That’s a thought worth reflecting on.
