Mr. Plankton (Netflix) Review :-

Like most people, I love a good K-drama—especially the sweet, feel-good ones where the male lead, flawless in every way, ends up falling for the cute, quirky female lead who knows exactly how to crack his overconfident exterior and bring out his softer side. They’re the perfect guilty pleasure, always entertaining and easy to binge. Mr. Plankton fits right into that mold, and then some, with a heartwarming journey woven in to keep things moving forward.

In this K-drama, both of our protagonists face life-changing news that leaves them devastated, prompting them to embark on an adventure to find Hae-jo’s father. While the series maintains a light-hearted tone, it does feel a bit all over the place at times. The storyline shifts between highs and lows, and while there are plenty of exciting adventures throughout its 10-episode run, the overall tone can feel a bit uneven.

Unfortunately, the humor in this series feels overly childish, and the characters’ motivations are often confusing. Throughout the show, they engage in random, bizarre behavior that’s meant to be funny but misses the mark. This type of humor might have worked a few years ago, but in 2024, it just comes across as silly and fails to deliver the laughs or entertainment it aims for.

What makes matters worse is that the characters are incredibly flat, seemingly written only for the sake of getting laughs. As a result, they often feel forced, like they’re trying too hard to be something they’re not. The humor falls flat, and instead of being entertaining, it can even be a little annoying at times. There’s also a noticeable lack of chemistry between the leads, so you don’t find yourself rooting for them to end up together. While these characters might work in a different context, here, the show seems unsure of what to do with them, making their dynamic feel disjointed.

Additionally, the subtitles are subpar at best. The translations are incomplete, and some phrases are either misinterpreted or left untranslated altogether, which might confuse viewers who don’t understand Korean. This poor translation quality takes away from the overall experience, making it harder for audiences to fully engage with the story.

Mr. Plankton (Netflix) Trailor :-

Much like its main character, the story feels a bit convoluted and hard to follow. The messaging is all over the place, making it difficult to pin down what the series is really trying to say. The title suggests a focus on the significance of even the smallest things, yet the show attempts to convey this idea in a way that feels overcomplicated, straying from its potential to offer a simple, emotional, and humorous story.

As I mentioned earlier, I found it difficult to invest in the relationship between Hae-jo and Jae-mi because there’s little connection to draw us in. In fact, I was more intrigued by the dynamic between Jae-mi and Eo Heung. There was something more compelling in their interaction, possibly because of Hae-jo’s actions—kidnapping Jae-mi and his overall cruelty—which makes it hard to believe that he could truly be someone worthy of being with her. Despite the show’s attempts to make their relationship work, it just doesn’t resonate with viewers.

Final Thought

Mr. Plankton misses the mark. It’s overly long, unnecessarily complicated, and feels overly contrived. The chemistry between the characters is lacking, and the humor often comes across as childish, leaving the viewer more frustrated than entertained. By the end, you’re left wondering why you invested so much time in something that ultimately offers so little in return.
