In the realm of sports dramas, the usual narrative often revolves around athletes surmounting challenges through sheer determination, pushing boundaries to taste success. However, director Sharan Sharma diverges from this conventional path in his romantic sports drama, delving into the nuances of self-doubt and insecurity, which can not only strain relationships but also thwart aspirations.
Sharma, collaborating with co-writer Nikhil Mehrotra, threads this theme through the tale of Mahendra ‘Mahi’ Agarwal (played by Rajkummar Rao), a former cricketer whose dreams were unfulfilled, and his wife Mahima ‘Mahi’ Agarwal (portrayed by Janhvi Kapoor), a dedicated doctor. The film’s charming title, a tribute to cricketer M S Dhoni, aptly encapsulates their intertwined journey. Mahendra, confined to his father’s sports shop, nurtures a lingering ambition for cricketing stardom. Meanwhile, Mahima contends with a demanding senior doctor who undermines her efforts. The film’s narrative prowess shines through its unique premise, skillfully portraying the dynamics of a newlywed couple, their training regimen, the competitive matches, and the strains on their relationship. However, pacing issues emerge, particularly in the latter half, as Mahendra’s internal struggles take precedence. Moreover, Mahendra’s abrupt shift from being excessively supportive to reacting poorly to Mahima’s progress after a single incident feels rushed and lacks conviction.
Rajkummar Rao delivers a nuanced performance, portraying the suppressed son, the supportive husband, and a man yearning for validation with depth and authenticity. His portrayal of frustration, especially towards Mahima, and his eventual realization of true success are profoundly impactful. Janhvi Kapoor shines as the initially timid Mahima, who undergoes a transformation to discover her identity and pursue her own dreams. Both actors bring authenticity to their characters’ journeys, enhancing the film’s emotional resonance. Supporting performances by Kumud Mishra, Zarina Wahab, and Rajesh Kumar further enrich the narrative.
“Mr & Mrs Mahi” also pays homage to the unsung heroes—the coaches and spouses—who silently support those striving for glory.
