The reality series, like Karan Johar’s description of Malaika Arora as a “thirst trap,” would have looked better on Instagram than on OTT.

Upon searching for “Moving in with Malaika” on Google, the show is suggested as a comedy series, perhaps hinting at the level of reality one can expect. Malaika Arora introduces her solo venture, a 16-episode series designed to offer viewers a personal look into her world. However, what unfolds is primarily a showcase of luxurious products, strategically placed throughout the episodes.

In the debut episode, Malaika embarks on her new endeavor with the support of close friends and family. Conversations with Farah Khan shed light on Malaika’s past and present. Interestingly, the premiere episode is revisited in the season finale, possibly to bring the journey full circle or to pivot “Moving in with Malaika” into a reality show centered around the Arora family.

From the outset, Malaika’s interactions with her younger sister, Amrita Arora, dominate the narrative, showcasing a genuine camaraderie. However, tensions surface between them, culminating in Malaika’s pointed question, “When will you be an amazing sister?!” The portrayal raises questions about whether such conflicts define Malaika’s life, overshadowing other aspects.

Following a car accident, Malaika spends the initial week of the show rebuilding her confidence. Unexpectedly, she expresses interest in trying stand-up comedy, a departure from her dance-centric background. The credibility of offering Malaika a comedic role, especially by filmmaker-dialogue writer Farhad Samji, is dubious, especially considering her reluctance to display her “acting” abilities. The 16-episode journey provides insight into Malaika’s aptitude as a performer, albeit in a fictional setting.

Moving in with Malaika” offers glimpses into the personal and professional life of the Bollywood star, albeit with a focus on luxury products and occasional contrived scenarios.

The highlight of the first week on “Moving in with Malaika” was undoubtedly her stand-up act. However, beyond that, the show’s direction seems unclear. How can one deliver engaging content without proper planning in a reality show format? Malaika’s stand-up set the tone for the series, but what exactly was the purpose of her comedic performance?

In one episode, Malaika’s friend and fashion designer Vikram Phadnis expresses concern about the attention surrounding her. He points out that wherever Malaika goes, there’s always a buzz. However, Malaika denies actively seeking attention, leaving the audience puzzled about the show’s premise.

Subsequent episodes reveal tensions between Malaika and her sister Amrita, exacerbated by the stand-up act where Malaika jokingly referred to Amrita as her “punching bag.” Guest stars further highlight the rift between the sisters, stretching the conflict over multiple episodes, suggesting underlying issues spanning years.

Despite social media portrayals of harmony, the reality depicted in “Moving in with Malaika” seems contrived. Even attempts to introduce conflict, such as bringing in Neha Dhupia as a mediator, feel forced and unnecessary, adding to the negativity.

On a positive note, glimpses of Malaika’s maternal side provide depth, particularly in discussions about internet trolls with Seema Kiran Sajdeh. However, attempts to address serious topics, like with Bharti Singh, feel out of place and forced.

Less favorable aspects include Malaika’s transformation from the iconic “Chaiyya Chaiyya” girl to a sensuous performance with Nora Fatehi, which some viewers found distasteful. Additionally, excessive product placement, especially concerning diamonds and skincare, becomes tedious and distracting.

Overall, “Moving in with Malaika” fails to capture the authenticity of shows like “Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives.” The prolonged focus on Malaika’s strained relationship with her sister overshadows other potential narratives, resulting in a lackluster viewing experience. Whether viewers will be invested in the series’ resolution remains uncertain, but for now, it falls short of expectations.
