The portrayal of unpredictability emerges as a cornerstone in crafting a compelling thriller. Director Vasan Bala, known for his work in “Mard ko Dard Nahi Hota,” along with writer Yogesh Chandekar, skillfully harness this element to keep the audience perpetually on edge. However, despite adeptly capturing this essence, the narrative falters in delivering a consistently engaging storyline and execution.
The crux of the story revolves around Jayant, portrayed by the talented Rajkummar Rao, a robotics expert who has maneuvered his way up the corporate ladder with cunning precision. Despite earning the trust of the company’s CEO and winning the affection of his daughter, Jayant’s success has also garnered him a host of adversaries and frenemies within the organization. Amidst this dynamic, he becomes ensnared in a sexual liaison with Monica, portrayed by Huma Qureshi, the office’s enigmatic femme fatale known for her string of dalliances with coworkers.
However, Monica’s insatiable greed sets off a chain of events that spiral out of control, resulting in a mounting body count and escalating chaos. As the plot thickens, the narrative delves into increasingly murky and convoluted territory. While initial plot twists offer a semblance of enjoyment, the introduction of additional characters serves to dilute the momentum, and the twists become progressively implausible.
Despite the commendable performances, particularly by Huma Qureshi, who infuses her character with charisma and depth, the overall impact is hindered by a lack of novelty in Rajkummar Rao’s portrayal. Radhika Apte’s depiction of a cheeky cop teeters on the verge of annoyance, while Sikander Kher effectively embodies the role of a disgruntled heir to a family business.
Cameo appearances by actors such as Radhika Mandan and Gulshan Deviah fail to add significant value to the narrative. However, the background score and title track emerge as standout aspects of the production, providing moments of respite amidst the clunky execution of the thriller.
In the saturated landscape of OTT platforms brimming with riveting murder mysteries, “Monica O my darling” struggles to carve out a distinctive identity. Despite moments of intrigue, the narrative fails to captivate consistently, ultimately falling short of its potential amidst superior offerings within the genre.
