Initially drawn to the series after experiencing another Dutch romance, Anne+, and the talent of its star and creator Hanna Van Vliet, I find myself captivated by the contributions of all involved in this project. What stands out most is the series’ willingness to venture beyond conventional romantic narratives. While it includes tales of widowers finding love anew and workaholic athletes entangled in extramarital affairs, it also delves into more unconventional territories.
One episode explores a lesbian couple’s deliberations on parenthood with the involvement of a co-parenting best friend, while another navigates the complexities of open relationships, involving partners and their children. There’s also a storyline following a father who starts afresh after losing his first family and another portraying a love story amidst disability.
The breadth of human experience depicted in Modern Love Amsterdam feels profoundly authentic, rendering each story relatable and ordinary in its own right. The series refrains from casting judgment on any of the depicted love stories, fostering an atmosphere of acceptance and understanding. Even in the episode centered on open relationships, where the protagonist struggles to come to terms with his wife’s unconventional lifestyle, the narrative refrains from condemning anyone involved.
What’s most commendable about this episode, and indeed each installment of the series, is its portrayal of non-monogamous relationships in a manner seldom seen on screen before. It eschews stereotypes and clichés, presenting a refreshingly simple yet liberating depiction of love and familial dynamics. The same holds true for the series’ portrayal of queer co-parenting and navigating love amidst grief and loss – all forms of love are depicted as valid when based on enthusiastic consent.
Each episode takes a slightly different narrative approach, adding depth and variety to the viewing experience. Whether incorporating elements of magical realism for comedic effect or utilizing dialogue-less flashbacks for dramatic impact, each story possesses its own unique tone and style.
In conclusion, Modern Love Amsterdam offers a refreshing and authentic portrayal of love in all its forms. With its diverse cast of characters and thought-provoking narratives, it challenges traditional romantic tropes and celebrates the complexities of human relationships. Each episode is a testament to the richness and diversity of love, reminding viewers that there is no one-size-fits-all formula for romance.
Modern Love Amsterdam is a beautiful anthology demonstrating a spectrum of queer, non-traditional, and emotional loves.
