Christmas wouldn’t be complete without our fair share of cheesy, often predictable holiday films, and this year, Netflix delivers with Meet Me Next Christmas—a feel-good rom-com about meeting new people and believing in the magic of miracles. Bright and colorful, the film sets the perfect festive mood and introduces Layla, an extroverted character who might initially make you cringe. She’s the type who strikes up a conversation with anyone she meets and is eager to open up to those around her—exactly what you’d expect from a Christmas movie protagonist. However, to my surprise, Layla is both charming and surprisingly endearing. There’s a sweetness to her outgoing personality that makes her not only tolerable but genuinely warm and lovable.
The film centers on Layla’s quest to make her ultimate love story a reality, which hinges on securing tickets to the sold-out Pentatonix Christmas Eve Concert. With the help of a concierge who seemingly has the power to make it happen, Layla and Teddy embark on a whirlwind 35-hour mission to track down the elusive tickets and, ultimately, meet James. Naturally, fate has its own plans—just as it always does. The film’s plot is predictably convenient, offering little in the way of surprises. However, despite its familiar storyline, there’s an undeniable warmth and sincerity in the performances of Devale Ellis and Christina Milian that makes it hard not to enjoy the ride.
Both actors, along with the members of Pentatonix, help propel the film forward effortlessly. While the film is as cheesy as you’d expect, there’s a charm in its playful, over-the-top antics that makes it hard not to smile. Yes, it’s predictably convenient, but it’s also sweet and feel-good, and you can’t help but root for Layla to find her mystery man. Milian deserves credit for balancing her character’s quirks—often, such roles can veer into caricature, but she keeps things grounded. Ellis is equally endearing, with his awkward, dorky charm that feels refreshingly genuine. Lastly, Kofie Sirboe, as the mysterious James, adds his own layer of charm, leaving viewers intrigued and captivated by his enigmatic presence.
