Adapted from the stage musical ‘Mean Girls’ and inspired by Rosalind Wiseman’s book ‘Queen Bees and Wannabes’, this film prioritizes light-hearted amusement over grand ambition. It remains faithful to its core message and target audience, unapologetically poking fun at itself. Enhanced by its musical format, the film exudes charm and is filled with laughter. Yet, for die-hard fans of the 2004 “Mean Girls,” it may lack novelty. While it doesn’t introduce groundbreaking elements, its commitment to capturing the essence of teenage dynamics and comedic timing ensures its appeal to Gen Z. Nonetheless, it maintains an average tone despite these commendable aspects.
Centering around Cady Heron (portrayed by Angourie Rice), who recently moved to the United States from Kenya with her mother, the film follows her encounters with “The Plastics,” a popular girls’ clique led by Regina (played by Renee Rapp). As Cady develops feelings for Regina’s ex-boyfriend, Aaron, tensions rise, and she becomes the target of Regina’s schemes. Supported by her friends Damian (Jaquel Spivey) and Janis (Auli’l Cravalho), Cady decides to confront Regina directly. Alongside seeking revenge, Cady undergoes a journey of self-discovery, learning the importance of respecting others for who they are.
A notable flaw of the film lies in its portrayal of Regina, which fails to fully capture her truly mean-spirited nature. Instead, audiences are presented with relatively mild and harmless aspects of her character, lacking the depth of true villainy. Consequently, Cady’s transformation from innocent to mean girl feels rushed and lacks authenticity.
Angourie Rice delivers a sincere performance as Cady Heron, albeit lacking the impact of Lindsay Lohan’s portrayal in the 2004 film. Renee Rapp shines as Regina, supported by the ensemble cast portraying ‘The Plastics.’ However, it’s Jaquel Spivey as Damian and Auli’l Cravalho as Janis who steal the spotlight, serving as the film’s narrators while delivering standout performances. Certain songs, notably ‘The Cautionary Tale,’ leave a lasting impression.
While the film struggles to match the benchmark set by the original, it has its moments of brilliance. Overall, “Mean Girls” presents itself as a mediocre film that succeeds in delivering amusement in parts.
